First-year Alabama offensive coordinator Tommy Rees might be known for his penchant to “run the damn ball,” but tight ends also tend to feast in his setup. During his tenure at Notre Dame, the offensive play-caller made Michael Mayer the focal point of his passing attack, helping the standout tight end lead the Irish in receptions in each of the past two years while pulling in a combined 138 catches for 1,649 yards and 16 touchdowns over that span.
Rees won’t have a tight end as talented as Mayer at Alabama this fall and should have better weapons at other positions. However, last month’s A-Day game served as an early indication that tight ends will still be a key part of the Crimson Tide’s offense. The position group tallied a combined 11 receptions for 84 yards during the scrimmage, reeling in six of the first 10 completions.
With that in mind, here are five questions we have about Alabama’s tight end unit and how Rees might utilize it more this fall.
