Top returners

All of them. In all seriousness, the returning talent on the line is something to behold. A'Shawn Robinson, Jonathan Allen and Jarren Reed are all top talents and big seasons are expected for each. The guys behind them are just as impressive: Dalvin Tomlinson, D.J. Pettway, Darren Lake, Joshua Frazier and Da'Shawn Hand all have immense talent as well and will see action throughout the course of the season.
Newcomer to watch
Daron Payne is from right up the highway in Birmingham, where he played at Shades Valley High School. The 6-foot-2, 315-pounder has the coaching staff excited about his potential. He combines raw size and strength with nice agility.
You need to know
Offenses have never been more difficult to defend. The defense faces the hurry-up, no-huddle attack one week and the next it's a pro-style balanced approach. Alabama is prepared for both with a mix of size and speed along the front.
Outlook
It's no secret that the team's strength lies unquestionably along the defensive line. It's no exaggeration to say that the line is three deep with not much drop off between the first and third units. The defense plays so much nickel and dime coverages that UA has needed to upgrade the versatility. Gone are the days of guys simply plugging holes. Nick Saban and Kirby Smart realized that they needed athletes who could do both. Thus you have the A'Shawn Robinsons and the Dalvin Tomlinsons and everything in between.
Key stat
The defensive line held eight of its 14 opponents to less than 100 yards rushing last season, allowing just 3.17 yards per carry.
Quotable
"We have a lot of talented defensive linemen. It's not that we're trying to separate ourself from each other. It's like we just try to go on the field each and every day and try to make each other better so we have a better front throughout the year."
- Junior Dalvin Tomlinson
