Amari Cooper wins SEC Offensive Player of the Year
Amari Cooper, who was named earlier this week as a finalist for the Heisman Trophy, was honored Wednesday as SEC Offensive Player of the Year as selected by league coaches.
Cooper has caught a conference-record 115 passes for 1,656 yards with 14 touchdowns, leading the University of Alabama to the SEC championship and a berth as the top seed in the inaugural College Football Playoff.
Cooper leads the nation in receiving yards and is second nationally in receiving yards per game (127.4) and touchdown receptions.
Other SEC players honored were:
* Missouri's Shane Ray as Defensive Player of the Year
* Missouri's Marcus Murphy as Special Teams Player of the Year
* Georgia's Nick Chubb as Freshman of the Year
* Georgia's Chris Conley as Scholar-Athlete of the Year
* LSU's La'el Collins as winner of the Jacobs Blocking Trophy
* Missouri's Gary Pinkel as Coach of the Year
Alabama players may have more hardware coming Thursday night when several national honors are awarded at The Home Depot College Football Awards, which will be televised by ESPN starting at 6 p.m. CT from Walt Disney World Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
Cooper is a finalist for the Biletnikoff Award, along with Colorado State's Rashard Higgins and West Virginia's Kevin White. The award goes to college football's outstanding receiver. Safety Landon Collins is a finalist for the Jim Thorpe Award, which goes to to the nation's best defensive back, along with Oregon's Ifo Ekpre-Olomu and Louisville's Gerod Holliman. Punter JK Scott is a finalist for the Ray Guy Award along with Idaho's Austin Rehkow and Utah's Tom Hackett.
