First-day schedule: Wednesday - South Carolina vs. LSU, 10 a.m.; Vanderbilt vs. Florida, 1 p.m.; Ole Miss vs. Georgia, 5 p.m.; Alabama vs. Kentucky, 8 p.m.
The skinny: Despite a setback against Alabama to end the regular season, Georgia rolls into the tournament as the No.1 seed with a 20-9-1 SEC mark. The Bulldogs aren't the league's hottest team by any stretch, however. West champion LSU has ripped off 16 consecutive wins, a streak which includes four SEC series sweeps. The rest of the field appears to be a mixed bag, with six schools entering with a league record anywhere from 15-15 to 17-13.
Crimson Tide look-ahead: An Alabama win over Kentucky Wednesday night would pit the Crimson Tide against the Ole Miss-Georgia winner at 8 p.m. on Thursday. An Alabama loss to Kentucky would place UA in the loser's bracket, where it would face the Ole Miss-Georgia loser on Thursday at 1 p.m.
The NCAA Regional picture: While Alabama's hot play of late makes a strong case for an NCAA Regional Tournament bid, nothing is official until brackets are announced on May 26. Alabama notables: Second baseman Ross Wilson was named SEC Freshman of the Week for his performance in the Crimson Tide's 2-1 series win at Georgia. Wilson batted 6-for-13 with eight runs scored, eight RBI and two home runs over three games. His 12 home runs on the season rank second among all SEC freshmen. ... UA coach Jim Wells said left-handed starter Miers Quigley is unavailable to pitch for the time being with back trouble. Wells said the best-case scenario for Quigley would be a Friday appearance, but UA must win one game to even reach Friday. Wells said UA's Wednesday starter is undetermined. ... Alabama has four players with double-digit home runs (Alex Avila, Ross Wilson, Matt Bentley, Kent Matthes) for the first time since five UA players did the trick in 2000 (Sam Bozanich, Brent Boyd, Kelly Gulledge, Ben King, Jeremy Brown.)
