It was a record night at Coleman Coliseum for the No. 22 University of Alabama men’s basketball team. The Crimson Tide broke four offensive school records en route to a 114-77 rout of East Tennessee State. In addition, the 114 points scored by the Tide marked the second highest point total in school history and the most scored since the 1977 season. UA improves to 5-1 for the season while the Buccaneers fell to 2-3.

As a team, Alabama set new school records for three pointers and three point attempts, hitting 19 for 41 from beyond the arc. The Tide also set a team game record with 30 assists, led by an impressive performance from Ronald Steele. The true freshman from Birmingham broke the school record with 18 assists, just one shy of the Southeastern Conference record. Even more impressively for the Birmingham native was that he did not commit a turnover.

“Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I would have 18 assists as a freshman,” Steele said. “The biggest thing for me was that I didn’t commit any turnovers.”

Alabama head coach Mark Gottfried was impressed with his young point guard.

“Ronald Steele had a heck of a game, and for a freshman, what a signature statement setting that assist record,” Gottfried said.

Gottfried also said this game sets the standard for how the Tide should play every game.

“The way we played tonight is how we need to play,” Gottfried said. “Defensively, we had lots of energy and intensity. We got our break going; we got out to run because of our defense. Then we turn around offensively and had 30 assists. Everybody was looking to make the extra pass.”

From the beginning of the game, Alabama was hot from the floor, hitting 58.3% of its shots from the field in the first half on its way to a 31 point halftime lead. The Tide’s hot shooting continued in the second half as the Tide connected on 54.1% of its shots to take as much as a 41 point lead before settling for the 37 point victory.

In addition to Steele’s night, Kennedy Winston paved the way for the Tide with his third career double-double. The junior scored 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in 27 minutes of action. Earnest Shelton and Chuck Davis also led the Tide scoring with 24 and 17 points, respectively. Justin Jonus and Jean Felix combined to hit seven of 14 from three point range in scoring 14 and 13 points each.

Dillion Sneed had a career night to lead the way for ETSU. The Chicago native scored a career-high 30 points and grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds

Alabama hits the road again this weekend, traveling to Charlotte, N.C. to take on the Charlotte 49ers Saturday night at 6:00 p.m. C.S.T. The game can be heard on the Crimson Tide Sports Network.
