MOBILE, Ala. — Flashing a polite smile, Levi Wallace answered a question about being a former walk-on for what must have felt like the 1,000th time. Last season the senior cornerback led Alabama with 15 pass breakups to go with 4.5 tackles for a loss, three interceptions and two sacks. However, to most, he’s still known as the plucky underdog who walked on with the Crimson Tide after failing to receive an offer out of high school.
Wallace admits he’d like to be thought of as more than a feel-good story. However, he understands the rarity of his situation and doesn’t mind talking about it no matter how many times it's brought up.
“It’s my story, I am a walk-on. Not too many people knew me prior to this year” Wallace said Tuesday while preparing for the Senior Bowl in Mobile. “I’m proud of what I’ve done and what I’ve accomplished here at Alabama.”
Wallace is one of four Alabama players taking part in Senior Bowl preparations this week, joining defensive end Da’Shawn Hand, offensive lineman Bradley Bozeman and punter JK Scott. The defensive back hopes the week spent in front of NFL scouts will not only help him make a new name for himself but also prove that his game is every bit as good as his story.
“It’s just a chance to showcase my skill set, show teams why they like me,” Wallace said. “Show them in person, a little bit more, show them how comfortable I am on that island. Just play how I play, how I started at Alabama. Keep doing what I’m doing what Coach Saban taught me.”
