The greatest punter in Alabama history is headed for the NFL. JK Scott was selected by the Green Bay Packers with the No. 172 overall pick in the fifth round of the NFL Draft on Saturday. He becomes the first former Crimson Tide punter to be taken since Chris Mohr went to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with the sixth round of the 1989 draft.
Scott is the eighth former Crimson Tide player to come off the board in this year’s draft, joining Minkah Fitzpatrick (No. 11, Miami Dolphins), Da'Ron Payne (No. 13, Washington Redskins), Rashaan Evans (No. 22, Tennessee Titans) Calvin Ridley (No. 26, Atlanta Falcons), Ronnie Harrison (No. 93, Jacksonville Jaguars), Da’Shawn Hand (No. 114, Detroit Lions) and Anthony Averett (No. 118, Baltimore Ravens).
A four-year starter at Alabama, Scott holds Alabama’s all-time for career punting yards with 11,074 and attempts at 243. He is also the Crimson Tide’s all-time leader in punting average at 45.6 yards per punt. Last season, Scott averaged 42.96 yards per punt. He earned second-team All-America honors from the AFCA as well as first-team All-SEC honors from conference coaches.
Scott is the second punter taken in this year’s draft, joining Texas’ Michael Dickson who was selected in the fifth round by the Seattle Seahawks. No punters were selected during last year’s draft.
