Henry has big haul at College Football Awards show
The University of Alabama has invested to create some of the best facilities in college football. It may need to invest in a newer, bigger trophy case: one just for
Derrick Henry.
Henry, the Crimson Tide running back who may become Alabama's second Heisman Trophy winner on Saturday, won three major awards Thursday at the College Football Awards in Atlanta, taking Maxwell Award and Walter Camp Player of the Year honors as well as the Doak Walker Award as the nation's top running back.
One of Henry's chief blockers,
Ryan Kelly, won the Rimington Trophy as the nation's top center.
The 6-foot-3, 242-pound running back became the first UA player to win the Walter Camp Football Foundation's top award. He became the second Maxwell Award winner from UA, following 2013 winner AJ McCarron, and the school's second Doak Walker winner after Trent Richardson, who won it in 2011.
Henry admits his appreciation for all of the hardware he is collecting.
"Thank God for them and thank my teammates and coaches," he said. "It's a blessing to be here and be up for these awards that I'm up for. ...
"Alabama is a great program with great tradition that's had great running backs. So it was my goal coming here to be up for awards like this and have success. I had a great team to put me in position."
Henry's next stop is New York City, where the Heisman will be awarded. Mark Ingram became Alabama's first winner of college football's top award in 2009. The junior from Yulee, Fla., broke Herschel Walker's 34-year-old SEC single-season rushing record and goes into the College Football Playoff with 1,986 yards and 23 touchdowns.
Alabama didn't win everything. Linebacker
Reggie Ragland was a finalist for the Chuck Bednarik Award, given to the defensive player of the year, but was beaten out by Temple's Tyler Matakevich. Defensive end
A'Shawn Robinson was a runner-up for the Outland Trophy, awarded to the nation's outstanding interior lineman, which was won by Joshua Garnett of Stanford.
UA also had five players named to the Walter Camp All-American Team: Henry, Kelly and Ragland to the first team, with Robinson and safety
Eddie Jackson on the second team.
