EUGENE, Ore. -- On a hot Saturday afternoon at Hayward Field, Alabama’s Quanesha Burks fouled on her first two jumps and leaped 20 feet, 10 inches on her third attempt to place ninth in the long jump at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials.
Only the top eight move on to the last three attempts in the long jump final, and after failing to advance, Burks exited the infield without watching the rest of the event and ran through the media zone without talking to reporters.
After qualifying fourth Friday with a jump of 22 feet, ¾ inch, the reigning NCAA indoor long jump champion Burks was visibly upset with her performance. Minutes later, Burks was outside the athlete recovery tent being consoled and embraced by a supporter.
Defending Olympic champion and three-time world champion Brittney Reese jumped 23-11 to win the event. Tianna Bartoletta (23-0) and Janay DeLoach (22-9) will also represent the United States in Rio, finishing second and third, respectively.
Burks has won every long jump event possible at the NCAA level. She’s a two-time SEC champion and has both an indoor and outdoor national championship; however, she’ll have to wait four more years to try again to make her first U.S. Olympic team.
