TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — There wasn’t any change at the top as the second edition of the College Football rankings was released Tuesday night. Alabama remains the No. 2 team in the nation, trailing only Georgia, while Notre Dame and Clemson round out the top four. The order is identical to the first rankings released last week.
If the season ended today, Georgia would face Clemson in one semifinal, while Alabama would play Notre Dame in the other. Oklahoma and TCU are the first two teams left out of the playoff, while Miami, Wisconsin, Washington and Auburn round out the top 10.
Five SEC teams were represented in the rankings including No. 1 Georgia, No. 2 Alabama, No. 10 Auburn, No. 16 Mississippi State and No. 24 LSU. The top four SEC teams will all be involved in games against each other on Saturday as Georgia (9-0, 6-0) travels to Auburn (7-2, 5-1) at 2:30 p.m. on CBS, while Alabama (9-0, 6-0 in SEC) travels to Mississippi State (7-2, 3-2) at 6 p.m. on ESPN.
If Georgia beats Auburn earlier in the day, Alabama could clinch its fourth straight SEC West title with a win over Mississippi State. Georgia clinched the SEC East title last weekend. If both Alabama and Georgia win out, it would create a No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup in the SEC Championship Game on Dec. 2.
