SG Dazon Ingram commits to Alabama, Avery Johnson

THEODORE | University of Alabama assistant basketball coach Antoine Pettway summed up the emotions of the UA basketball program with a not-too-mysterious post on his Twitter account on Friday afternoon.
"So nice he did it twice," Pettway said.
The second commitment of Dazon Ingram was the sweetest for the Crimson Tide, assuring that Ingram would be a part of the 2015 UA signing class, and the first signee for new head coach Avery Johnson.
Ingram was the state's "Mr. Basketball" and the top-rated prospect in the state. He led Theodore to the AHSAA Class 7A semifinals with averages of 20 points and 11 rebounds per game, had verbally committed to UA in November but did not sign a National Letter of Intent at that time. He reopened his recruitment in March after Alabama dismissed former head coach Anthony Grant and received interest from nearly 30 schools.
"Once I decommited, I picked up interest from a lot of colleges," Ingram said at his commitment ceremony at Theodore High School. "I wasn't sure what would happen at Alabama but once Coach AJ got there, that sparked my interest back up. He played and coached in the NBA and that is where I want to go.
"It was also important that coach Pettway was still there. We have a great relationship, like family."
Ingram said the most intriguing alternative that came late in his recruitment was interest from Kentucky.
"I talked to Coach (John) Calipari and the assistants," Ingram said. "They told me that if Alabama would release me from the financial aid papers I had signed (in November), there would be an offer for me.
"I actually think Alabama would have released me but I still felt like Alabama was the best for me and that was what sparked my decision."
Ingram was the first player Johnson visited after he took the job earlier this month. He joins 6-foot-10 Donta Hall from Luverne and 6-5 Brandon Austin of Carver-Montgomery in the Crimson Tide recruiting class. Johnson said earlier this week that he would like to add two more players to the UA roster in the late signing period.
