RCS Dallas: Analysts' commitment predictions

COPPELL, Texas - The fifth stop of the Rivals Camp Series is in the books and many top uncommitted prospects were in attendance.

Today, Rivals national recruiting director Adam Gorney and national recruiting analysts Clint Cosgrove and Nick Harris address five players who attended the camp and make their predictions about where the prospects could end up.

A large handful of SEC programs are the standouts at this point in Shanahan's recruitment, but LSU, Georgia and Texas A&M are the ones that Shanahan says he plans on using official visits on as of now. With that in mind, there are positives drawing Shanahan to each program, whether it be joining the defending national champions in Athens, joining an intriguing new vision in Baton Rouge under Brian Kelly or helping build a national contender in College Station. This is a wide-open race at this point, so it's tough to find the "right pick," but I'm gonna go with Texas A&M. - Harris

Shanahan can go anywhere, and he's visiting all over the country. But as the five-star offensive lineman who can play inside or outside starts to really focus on schools I get the feeling he's going to end up somewhere in the SEC. The Austin (Texas) Westlake standout is visiting Georgia, Texas Tech (where his brother goes) and LSU in the coming weeks and I'd watch those trips closely. Texas A&M is also squarely in his recruitment and the Aggies have a very real chance to get him. Knowing his personality and what Shanahan is looking for, I'll pick Georgia. - Gorney

The Dallas camp was the first time I had the opportunity to see Shanahan in person and he is every bit as advertised. That leads me to believe that he will be a take for just about any team in the country and that really clouds things for me here. Shanahan has a brother at Texas Tech, was wearing Tech gloves at the camp and also tweeted at Red Raiders head coach Joey McGuire at the camp. All of that leads me to believe Tech is a serious contender here. But, at the end of the day it is going to be difficult for him to turn down the Georgias and Texas A&Ms of the world. While I give Tech a shot here, I am going to pick the reigning national champs and go with Georgia as my pick. - Cosgrove

When Oklahoma offered Stone early in his recruitment process, it became clear that it would be tough to knock the Sooners off the top spot on his list. As his recruitment has gone more national and after a move to the IMG Academy, Oklahoma has continued to weather the storm with major contenders getting involved. As long as the Sooners can translate that momentum into on-field performance in 2022, I don't see why Brent Venables and his crew won't be able to come out on top. My pick is Oklahoma. - Harris

A visit to Texas A&M last weekend went really well as the 2024 four-star defensive lineman had multiple conversations with coach Jimbo Fisher and the Aggies really impressed him across the board. But I still get the sense that Stone remains very high on Oklahoma and even though he's now at Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy, Stone is originally from Del City, Okla., and playing for the Sooners has been a dream. Wisconsin is a dark horse, too, and the Florida schools could have a chance if Stone loves his time playing in the state. I'm taking Oklahoma though. - Gorney

While Stone is now at Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy, he is originally from Oklahoma. When you are from Oklahoma and grow up with Sooner football surrounding you every day that is going to be a tough offer to pass up. Stone seemed to enjoy his visit to Texas A&M, and while the Aggie program has as much to offer as any school in the country, Stone will have a much better chance of competing for early playing time at Oklahoma. When you have his talent and know you are capable of playing as a freshman, the possibility of starting out on the bench can become a big part of the decision process. Stone is Oklahoma all day for me. - Cosgrove

In what was relatively a wide-open race for much of his recruitment, four-star wide receiver Jaquaize Pettaway has seen Texas and Oklahoma move toward the top following visits to each program. Both receivers coaches, Texas' Brennan Marion and Oklahoma's Cale Gundy, have made big impressions and it has made this recruitment razor-thin close ahead of an important official visit swing in the summer. While schools such as Ohio State and Cincinnati will land official visits - creating the possibility for some movement up top - I see Texas winning out in the end. - Harris

There are others involved and many more visits to come but this should come down to a battle between Texas and Oklahoma, and I'm going to pick the Longhorns. If five-star quarterback Arch Manning ends up picking Texas before Pettaway comes off the board then it's even more likely because top receivers will want to play with the No. 1 player in the 2023 class. The Sooners also have a very talented QB committed in Jackson Arnold and that coaching staff is filled with aggressive recruiters, but I'm taking Texas. - Gorney

This one isn't over but I believe it comes down to Texas or Oklahoma. I would usually choose Texas in this situation, but the new staff at Oklahoma can recruit and sell a vision that is bolstered by the previous success of Oklahoma receivers in college and beyond. My head says Texas here, but I am going to go with Oklahoma as my pick. - Cosgrove

This recruitment flipped on its head this past weekend when Texas A&M extended an offer to Stroh, whose parents both attended the university. The legacy recruit spoke highly of his time in College Station for the Spring Game, and it's clear that Jimbo Fisher and his staff have entered the race in a big way. While Texas and Arkansas have benefitted from a longer-standing relationship, I think the legacy factor will play into this one too much for those programs to recover. I'm taking Texas A&M, but I'm watching closely on what shakes out during his official visit tour this summer. - Harris

Baylor seemed to have a real shot with Stroh and by no means are the Bears or other programs eliminated. The four-star offensive lineman made that clear this past weekend that he will still consider other programs, but there are just too many connections to Texas A&M here. The massive lineman landed his Aggies offer in recent days and it's the school where his mom, dad, uncle and aunt attended and A&M remains poised for a run to the College Football Playoff. I'll take Texas A&M, and I wouldn't be surprised if his recruitment doesn't last much longer. - Gorney

This one comes down to A&M, Texas and Arkansas for me. I see Texas A&M being the team to beat as things stand right now. Stroh has family history with the Aggies, they are one of the hottest recruiting teams in the country and his style of football is a perfect fit for A&M's brand of football. While Stroh would fit in well at both Arkansas and Texas, I see the Aggies winning the battle for the massive offensive lineman's commitment in the end. - Cosgrove

It felt like almost a given that Porter would end up in Texas' 2023 class after a big visit in December generated some buzz around a possible commitment. But the four-star defensive lineman has drug things out a bit and is not planning on making a commitment until the Under Armour All-American Game in January. That would spell trouble for his chances at ending up at Texas, given that the Longhorns have limited spots to take in his position group this year and contenders such as Baylor and Arizona State continue to loom. I don't feel as confident as I did when I made the FutureCast for Porter to end up at Texas, but the Longhorns are still my pick until I'm given a reason to feel otherwise. - Harris

When Texas offered, it felt like Porter would make a quick decision and he would land with the Longhorns. But the four-star defensive end from Cypress (Texas) Ranch has actually slowed down his recruitment, and that could make things more interesting. A recent visit to Baylor went well and many others are pursuing him. Texas can't wait forever and if Porter is going to delay until an all-star game then the Longhorns might have a now-or-never moment to figure out. I don't think Porter is going to miss the opportunity to play in Austin, however, so I'm sticking with Texas. - Gorney

Prior to his recent Baylor visit, Texas would have been the pick for me. Maybe I'm reading into it too much, but the Baylor visit seemed to change the trajectory of Porter's recruitment. While Texas seemed to be the obvious pick when they offered, he has strung the process out and that leads me to believe that Porter is more intrigued by the opportunity to play in Aranda's defense than he is by the luster of the Texas program. This is total speculation but I am going to go out on a limb and pick Baylor here. - Cosgrove
