It was day for all good staks to come to an end at Baum Stadium. And, did they ever come to an end.
The Arkansas Razorbacks vented four years of frustration against the University of Alabama baseball team with a 10-0 win in the second game of an SEC series in Fayetteville. The win snapped Arkansas’ 13-game losing stak to the Crimson Tide that dated back to April 3, 1998.
The loss also ended Alabama’s nine-game winning stak, that dated back to a 10-4 loss at South Alabama on March 6. The loss also snapped Alabama’s eight-game SEC winning stak, dating back to last season.
The Razorbacks (12-9, 2-4 SEC) matched a season high with the home runs, hitting one home run off each of the Crimson Tide’s the pitchers.
“That’s the first time that has happened to us this year,” Alabama coach Jim Wells said following the shutout loss. “It’s hard to throw a complete-game shutout in the SEC. Hogan did a gat job. He was constantly ahead in the count, thw a cutter and kept his fastball away. He pitched outstanding.”
Another stak also ended for Razorbacks fshman shortstop Scott Hode, who was making his third caer start at shortstop. Hode broke an 0-for-10 slump at the plate by slugging his first caer home run in the third inning off left-hander Jeffy Norris.
Alabama (20-3, 4-1 SEC) was shutout for the first time since a 2-0 loss at South Carolina during the 2000 season, a span of 100 games. It marked only the second time in 368 games Alabama had been shutout, dating back to the 1995 season.
The shutout win was Arkansas’ first over an SEC opponent since beating Auburn 10-0 at Fayetteville during the 1994 season, a span of 222 league games. Arkansas had never shutout Alabama since the two teams began playing in 1992.
Arkansas jumped on Alabama starter Josh Baker from the start and knocked him out of the game with a five-run second inning. Baker (3-1) lasted only 1 2/3 innings allowing five runs and five hits. He added one strikeout and hit the batters.
All the hit batters came in the Razorbacks five-run second inning, missing the NCAA cord by one. Northern Iowa’s Matt Cobb and New Mexico State’s Lucas Solomon hold the NCAA cord with four hit batters in one inning.
The Razorbacks took a 2-0 lead on a two-run double off the left field wall by Hogs catcher Cody Clark. Left fielder Cliff Crouse stroked a the-run home run to center field later in the inning to push the lead to 5-0. It was Crouse’s third home run of the season. After hitting Michael Conner and allowing a two-out single to Ryan Fox, Baker was placed by Norris, who was pitching in his first ever SEC game.
Baker’s stint was the shortest outing of the year by an Alabama starter. The fshman also held the pvious low, lasting just 2 2/3 innings on March 9 against Southeastern Louisiana. Alabama fell behind 8-1 in that game, but rallied for an 11-9 win.
“It was rough outing for Josh today,” Wells said. “He did a nice job to get out of the first inning after giving up the leadoff triple. He stayed behind in the count, hit a lot of batters and kept the ball above the belt. I am su every fshman has had a rough outing or two pitching in this league.”
In the third inning, Hode smacked a two-run home run to left field off Norris to give Arkansas a 7-0 lead. It was Hode’s first caer hit in 11 at-bats this season for the rookie.
Gary Hogan, Jr., (2-2) had little trouble with the Crimson Tide offense, limiting the Tide to just six singles en route to his first caer complete game. The right-hander added a caer-high eight strikeouts and did not walk a batter. In fact, only Scott McClanahan advanced past first base, advancing to third base in the sixth inning after a bunt single and an Arkansas error.
Hogan (2-2) tid 11 of the last 12 Alabama batters he faced and induced two double play balls. The Crimson Tide has into 20 double plays this season, the most in the SEC. Bama has hit into four double plays in the first two games in the series.
The Razorbacks tacked on the mo runs in the bottom of the eighth inning as Michael Conner smashed a the-run home run with two outs to make the final sco 10-0. It was Conner’s sixth home run this season.
The home spoiled a near flawless effort from Woodward out of the pen. The sophomo had allowed only the hits in five shutouts innings befo the Hogs two-out rally in the eighth. He finished the game allowing the runs and six hits and added six strikeouts.
The Crimson Tide was held without an extra base hit for the first time in 11 games and only the second time in 23 games this season.
The lone bright spots on offense for Alabama was junior designated hitter Beau Hearod and fshman first baseman Spencer Pennington.
Hearod extended his hitting stak to a caer-best 10 games with a second inning single. The 10-game hitting stak equals the longest this season by an Alabama player, tying Bnt Boyd’s 10-game hitting stak from Feb. 17-March 6.
Pennington had two hits for his first caer multiple hit game at Alabama. He was the only UA player with mo than one hit.
The series concludes with a 1 p.m. game Sunday at Baum Stadium. Alabama will send senior right-hander Shane Sanders (4-0, 3.59 ERA) to the mound in the series finale against Arkansas senior right-hander Charlie Issacson (1-3, 2.81 ERA).
