The big names in the University of Alabama’s draft class for 2016 didn’t do much Wednesday at the program’s Pro Day, which came with its own slogan “Respect is earned” via the form-fitted shirts each athlete wore.

Truth is, they didn’t have to.Derrick Henry, A’Shawn Robinson, Jarran Reed, Reggie Ragland, Ryan Kelly, Kenyan Drake and Cyrus Jones did all they needed to do at the NFL Combine last month in Indianapolis.

Henry ran routes as a wide receiver to show scouts he could catch the ball, but that’s about all the Heisman Trophy winner did for the day.

Instead it was players like Dillon Lee and Geno Matias-Smith who may have made the most of the workout for all 32 NFL teams represented.

Lee worked at outside and inside linebacker his senior season and was a solid special teams contributor too, a role that may help land him on a roster this fall.

“He’s got a lot of toughness,” UA coach Nick Saban said. “He can run. Smart player and great special teams player. So if you’re looking for a guy on your team to be a backup/special teams player that you could develop into a potential starter some day, especially in regular, he would be a great candidate for that.”

Lee caught the attention of NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock, too.“He didn’t get a Combine invite, and then he comes out here and runs a 4.78,” Mayock said. “He’s a big athletic kid. Special teams coaches are here taking note of it.”

Quarterback Jake Coker, who also didn’t get invited to the Combine, threw approximately 50 passes for scouts to Henry, former UA wide receiver Richard Mullaney and former UA tight end Brian Vogler.

Coker has the size that make scouts drool, but it’s his lack of actual playing experience that is a big knock against him.

“I think Jake has got a lot of upside,” Saban said. “Jake only has one year when he really played and was ‘The Man.“I think Jake is going to do just fine. I think he’s going to need to continue to develop. He’s got a great arm who can make all the throws. For his size he is very athletic, and I think a lot of people are going to like that.”

For his part, Coker said he was pleased with how the day went.

“Did some good things, did some bad things,” Coker. “I know we were pretty clean on the intermediate routes and there were a few slip-ups on the deep balls that I wish I had back."
