Jase McClellan was Alabama’s lone representative on this year’s preseason watchlist for the Maxwell Award released Monday. The Maxwell Award is presented annually to the player of the year in all of college football.

During his junior season last year, McClellan tied for Alabama’s team lead with seven rushing touchdowns while finishing second with 655 yards on the ground. The 5-foot-11, 212-pound back also caught 14 passes for 174 yards and three more scores through the air.

McClellan is expected to lead a loaded Alabama backfield that features five former Rivals100 backs. The Aledo, Texas native is one of three returning backs along with fellow senior Roydell Williams and sophomore Jamarion Miller. Alabama also brought in a pair of highly-touted freshmen in Justice Haynes and Richard Young.

Alabama has produced five Maxwell Award winners since the award was first established in 1937. All of those have come in the last 10 seasons as AJ McCarron (2013), Derrick Henry (2015), Tua Tagovailoa (2018), DeVonta Smith (2020) and Bryce Young (2021) previously took home the honor.
