Tight end Jalen Shead never planned on playing football in college. The 2021 prospect didn't even join his football team until a little over a year ago.
His late start didn't matter when he called Alabama tight ends coach Jeff Banks on Thursday. To Shead's surprise, Banks offered him a scholarship while describing the tight end as 'beyond good enough to play for Alabama.'
"Whenever you're watching Alabama, you don't really see yourself playing for them because they just have 17 national championships and like 27 SEC Championships," Shead said. "You never really see yourself playing there because it's just out of normal. So on that note, it was pretty exciting and surprising."
It was hardly the first surprise he received from the Crimson Tide.
That came last summer when Shead attended a three-day camp in Tuscaloosa.
