So it seems, every year there is at least one team on the recruiting trail that makes some unexpected noise landing highly sought after players. This season, FCS’s Campbell University has been the team making that noise. Their latest get, four-star 2022 defensive back Edric Weldon, is turning heads.

Weldon joins a 2022 Fighting Camels recruiting haul that already includes a pair of Virginia three-stars in offensive lineman Desaun Williams and cornerback Akim Sledge. While both Williams and Sledge have impressive double-digit offers from SEC, ACC, Big 12, and Big Ten programs, but the Miami Central standout has over 30 offers.

The question everyone wants to know, how did Campbell University make that initial impact getting Weldon’s attention on the recruiting trail? Weldon opened up, “When I got hurt (ACL), a bunch of schools fell off but Campbell was still on me. They are with me when I am down. I want to rock out with the ones that are with me from Day 1. That’s why I decided to roll with them.”

Weldon gave further detail on his relationship with the Campbell coaching staff, “We have a good relationship. I like them, and they have a good team. I am comfortable.”

Speaking further on the draw to Bules Creek, “All my people are wanting me to leave Florida. With Campbell, I like the campus and academics. They have my major and a great communications, TV and journalism program; they have all that.”

Given Campbell’s size, speed, and athleticism, he brings a versatility to the field that most cannot. Responding to where he may play with the Camels once on campus, Weldon responded with, “Whatever they want, I am good with. I have a good relationship with them.”

Campbell continued, “I’m versatile. I can play safety, corner, and rover like Isaiah Simmons (Arizona Cardinals). Wherever they need me, I will play. It is weird to see a person this big playing defensive back. Most players my size cannot move like I can.”

Weldon has not visited the North Carolina campus yet but plans to in December after his surgery in November.
