Pro Day notes: McElroy eyes April 5 workout
TUSCALOOSA | Former University of Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy, who did not run the 40-yard dash at Pro Day Wednesday due to a hand injury from the Senior Bowl, said he is targeting April 5 for a private workout to show scouts his throwing skills.
"The coaches made it our Pro Day, for myself, and Earl (Alexander) and Preston (Dial) to come out and run some routes," McElroy said. "I'd love for Julio and Mark to be here, but I'm not sure Julio is going to be 100 percent."

McElroy said he hopes to begin throwing to stationary targets next week, and be throwing effectively to receivers soon after. The fifth-year senior said he has heard projections of his draft status ranging from the middle rounds to the late rounds of the seven-round draft. McElroy had a cast removed from his throwing hand Tuesday, and came to Pro Day wearing only a protective splint. He cracked a bone in two places in the second half of the Senior Bowl when struck his hand on a teammate's helmet while following through on a pass.
After a stellar combine workout that included a 4.39 40-yard dash time, Julio Jones said he does not plan to perform any more workouts before the draft while he recovers from foot surgery. That would preclude him from catching passes during McElroy's April workout for pro scouts.
"I think I'm done with workouts (until the draft)," Jones said. "The thing for me is just getting back healthy and having my foot 100 percent."
McElroy also addressed recent reports that his score on the Wonderlic test, a cognitive exam taken by all NFL Combine participants, was a 43 (out of 50) rather than initial reports of 48.
"I was told the day I left the combine, three days after I took the test, that I got a 48. ... It was faulty information that I thought was from a very credible source. I wish we wouldn't have made the 48 public, but at the same time there's not a whole lot you can do at that point," McElroy said. "I never tried to be dishonest and I apologize if anybody felt misled, but a 43, I'll take it."
Lockout talk
As NFL owners and the NFL Players Association continue haggling over a labor agreement, a potential lockout for the 2011 NFL season looms. Not even active NFL players know what to expect, and incoming rookies like Alabama's Pro Day contingent know even less. For their part, they are remaining focused on the draft.
"You want to know what's going on, you wish you had all the answers," McElroy said. "We know they're getting closer. We know what's going to happen for the most part if they can't reach a deal. I'm not sure if we're going to decertify (the union) or what that will entail. We've just got to be prepared to go without football until they reach an agreement."
Although the NFL's collective bargaining agreement with the union is set to expire before the draft, the league will still conduct the annual New York City event. Jones said he looks at a potential lockout as a chance to continue his education.
"I really don't look into that. If they do have a lockout, then I'll come back to school here and continue rehabbing," said Jones.
Dareus No.1?
The Carolina Panthers, with the No. 1 overall pick, are reportedly considering UA's Marcell Dareus among their options.
"It would look good on a resume. … I've never been at the top of anything," Dareus said. "For people to acknowledge me for what I've done and put me that high, it's unheard of. I didn't think I would ever be in that position."
Added UA coach Nick Saban: "Marcell is very explosive. He's got great quickness. He's a good athlete. He's a hard worker. He's got great character, which I think a lot of people like about him. … Defensive linemen are always a high priority in the draft because there aren't many of them, so I think all of these things will help to benefit him."
Quote of the Day
Dareus on Panthers head coach Ron Rivera: "He's a real down-to-Earth, humble kid."
Tidebits
Alabama JuCo signee Jesse Williams was among many active UA players who watched Pro Day from the sidelines. Williams, who recently had a scope procedure on his knee, was walking normally. UA coach Nick Saban has said Williams should be ready for spring practice when it begins on March 21. … Although he declined to divulge an exact number, Jones said his 40-yard dash times during his training in Arizona before the combine were even better than the 4.39 he posted officially in Indianapolis. … Denver Broncos vice president and former All-Pro quarterback John Elway was on hand for UA's Pro Day. The Broncos and Carolina Panthers were three of the most heavily-represented NFL teams.
