TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — What was expected to be a competitive battle between two AP Top 25 teams quickly turned into an onslaught.
No. 6 Alabama cruised to a dominant 111-73 victory over No. 24 Mississippi State. The Bulldogs looked like they would keep pace early, but the Crimson Tide shut the door with a 31-10 first-half run, sparked by a Mo Dioubate 3-pointer around the 14-minute mark. Alabama never looked back, securing a crucial win before entering its final three games of SEC play against three top-five-ranked teams.
Before we move on to Saturday evening’s matchup between Alabama and No. 5 Tennessee, here are five key numbers that defined the Tide’s win over the Bulldogs.
7 - Alabama guard Chris Youngblood splashed home seven 3-pointers on 11 attempts, marking a season-high in shots made from deep for the USF Transfer.
Youngblood got both his shot and the Coleman crowd going early, answering Mississippi State’s opening three-pointer with a deep shot of his own through contact for an early four-point play.
After the game, Youngblood said it was business as usual, playing his role and enjoying the sport.
“Every game, we got to have fun and shoot open shots,” Youngblood said. “We got Mark Sears getting in the paint whenever he wants, and he’s the center of focus, so he just makes my job ten times as much easier.”
The Tuscaloosa native finished with a season-high 27 points, three rebounds and an assist.
221 – Alabama center Cliff Omoruyi posted a career-high offensive rating of 221, surpassing the 200 mark for just the second time this season.
Omoruyi wrapped up the night with eight points on a perfect 4-for-4 shooting, adding four offensive rebounds and an assist. Omoruyi assisted one of Youngblood’s seven 3-pointers on a second-chance offensive rebound in the first half.
Alabama head coach Nate Oats said Omoruyi’s sense of urgency has been “a bit better” over the previous two games.
10 – Mark Sears dished out 10 assists, marking the ninth time he has reached double digits in his Alabama career. The Crimson Tide is 9-0 in those games, and in the two this season where Sears hit 10 assists, Alabama has outscored its opponents by 66 points (Oklahoma and Mississippi State).
Oats said he will continue encouraging Sears to build on his positive momentum, adding that games like these support that approach.
“ Sears was really happy for everybody else that was able to get in the scoring column, and he was able to get some assists,” Oats said. “We definitely will show highlights of this,”
144.5 – Alabama recorded a 144.5 offensive efficiency rating on KenPom, its highest in SEC play and second-highest of the season.
The Crimson Tide sunk 48.9% of its 3-point attempts, had an effective field goal percentage of 67.6% and had five players in double figures.
38 – Alabama’s 38-point win over Mississippi State was its largest margin of victory in SEC play this season, surpassing its 28-point win over Oklahoma in the conference opener. According to KenPom, the Crimson Tide had a 100% chance to win with more than 10 minutes remaining.
