One day after saying he didn’t have a decision, Kirby Smart made it official Tuesday just who his field goal kicker will be – Rodrigo Blankenship.

Not only will the sophomore be handling Georgia’s kickoffs and extra points, but he will also be Georgia’s man on kickoffs after showing improvement in that area throughout the course of fall practice.

Blankenship beat out Wofford transfer David Marvin for both spots.

“As far as kicking off, Rodrigo is going to kick off. Rodrigo is also going to do the placekicking. We’ll start with him as the placekicker,” Smart said. “David will do some other things for us, but Rodrigo has done a really good job, been really consistent. We’re excited for where he is. We told Rodrigo that it’s really important that we hit a high percentage of our field goals and he’s competing to do that.”

Smart’s decision may have surprised some, but Georgia’s head coach made it clear that his decision was made on the field.

“It was really tight,” Smart said. “Consistency probably was the biggest difference.”

Last year Blankenship converted 14 of 18 field goal attempts, with a long of 49 yards at Kentucky. He made all 26 of his extra point attempts.

“I think the competition last year helped him elevate his game. He had to compete last year to get it, and didn’t really win it early last year and came on strong to really win it towards the end,” Smart said. “I certainly think it helped this year having been through that. He was a model of consistency throughout the camp of just being very consistent in his kickoffs, and not having the ups and downs that sometimes kickers have.”
