Spring Practice Coverage

We are just 20-days away from A-Day and have had two weeks to view Alabama Football’s spring camp, listen to Nick Saban’s opening thoughts on the 2017 season, as well as watch former Alabama Elite participate in Pro-Day gearing up for the NFL Draft. Today Kyle Henderson of BamaInsider.com provides you with 10 things he's learned from the Month of March regarding Alabama Football.

ONE: Don’t come to Tuscaloosa if you’re from Clemson

To close the Month of March, Tuscaloosa, Alabama witnessed a rather bizarre scene Friday night as former Clemson Quarterback Deshaun Watson attended a local watering hole Innisfree, as to why we do not know, some reports have stated he has friends within the City, but that sounds rather odd following Clemson’s 35-31 victory over the Crimson Tide in the 2017 National Title Game. Reportedly, former Alabama Linebacker Ryan Anderson aggressively asked Watson to leave the bar, both men stood up, however, nothing escalated. Watson has emerged as a better person character-wise, showing more class, Anderson now labeled as a hot head after the very strange incident on Friday. Strange, strange, strange, and the lesson could read: Watch where you go, it might save you some strife.

TWO: Depth at Running Back is Abundant

The talent at the running back position for Alabama is overwhelmingly abundant as the Crimson Tide moves through Spring Camp. In our latest Depth Chart look, we have Damien Harris and Bo Scarbrough as the projected started. Harris ran for 1,037-yards off 146 carries in 2016, Scarbrough ran for 812-yards off 125 carries last season. Joshua Jacobs who has looked very capable of doing big things this year has experience from last season rushing for 567-yards off 85 carries, behind those three are 5-Star Early Enrollee Najee Harris, 4-Star B.J. Emmons, and 4-Star Brian Robinson. “We do have a lot of good running backs,” Saban said during the second week of spring practice. “We went from not having very many to having a whole bunch. I think they've all done really, really well.”

Alabama returns the SEC Offensive Player of the Year in Quarterback Jalen Hurts who will only be a sophomore this year. As a Freshman in 2016, Hurts threw for 2,780-yards, 23 touchdowns, 9 interceptions, and also rushed for 954-yards with 13 additional touchdowns. After several quarterbacks on last year’s roster transferred out, behind Hurts are two early enrollee quarterbacks that are just Freshmen. 4-Star Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa the left-handed phenom out of Honolulu, Hawaii and 6-foot-3, 181-pound 4-Star Mac Jones out Jacksonville, Florida. It’s a very talented group obviously, Hurts is one of the most dangerous quarterbacks in the Country, but the lack of overall experience for this group could come to test the Crimson Tide in the future.

FOUR: Linebackers are emerging

Returning for the Crimson Tide at the middle linebacker position is Rashaan Evans who recorded 52 total tackles during the 2016 season. Evans has emerged as a true leader this spring season. Red-Shirt Junior Christian Miller at 6-foot-4, 240 pounds looks like a very capable SAM backer at the JACK backer position it looks to be Anfernee Jennings. The additional middle backer position is projected to be Shaun Dion Hamilton, but depending on his health, look for to be next in line to provide a big hitter across the middle of the field, Wilson is a 6-foot-2, 231-pound linebacker out of Montgomery, Alabama.

FIVE: Receivers look to rise up

The Crimson Tide loses Ardarius Stewart who left Alabama after his junior year. In 2016 Stewart led the team in yards receiving with 864-yards off 54 receptions and 8 touchdowns. Now a junior Calvin Ridley has stood out as the team’s top receiver through two weeks of practice. Ridley caught for 769-yards off 72 receptions as a sophomore and 89 receptions for 1,045-yards as a freshman in 2015. Other notable receivers which have stood out include Red-Shirt Senior Robert Foster, True Freshman Jerry Jeudy who is another receiver out of the South Florida Area, and 6-foot-6, 209 pound True Freshman Tyrell Shavers has turned heads early on.
