JIM WELLS LOOKING FOR ALABAMA RECORD 488TH WIN: University of Alabama head baseball Coach Jim Wells looks to become the school's all-time winningest coach as the Crimson Tide hosts the Appalachian State Mountaineers in the first game of a three-game series Friday, March 3 at 6:30 p.m. here at Sewell-Thomas Stadium. Wells tied Dr. Barry Shollenbeger (1980-94) as the school's all-time winningest coach with his 487th win in Tuesday's 7-6 victory over Birmingham Southern. Wells has compiled a 487-228 (.682) all-time record in his 12 years at Alabama. Shollenberger was 487-334-1 (.534) in 15 years at the Capstone. In addition, Wells and Shollenbeger have won more games than any other coach in the history of Alabama athletics (see chart on page 6). Wells has guided the Crimson Tide to three College World Series appearances and nine NCAA Tournament trips in his first 11 seasons. He has one SEC regular-season championship (1996) and six SEC Tournament titles (1995, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2002 and 2003). His UA teams have won 40 or more games eight times, including four 50-win seasons. Wells averaged 43.5 wins per season in his first 11 years at Alabama. He is also the winningest coach in Northwestern State history with a 192-89 (.683) record from 1990-94. He is 2005 inductee into the NSU Athletic Hall of Fame and his jersey number (17) was retired by the Athletics Department when the Crimson Tide played at Brown-Stroud Field during the 2003 season. Alabama (9-3) puts its four-game winning streak on the line in Friday's series opener with Appalachian State. The streak includes a series win over FIU and a hard-fought 7-6 win over Birmingham Southern on Feb. 28th. The Crimson Tide is batting .288 (38-for-132) during its current winning streak with four home runs and six RBI. Senior first baseman Spencer Pennington (Fayette) has led the way at the plate the last four games with a .455 (5-for-11) average and has two RBI. Senior catcher Kody Valverde (Baton Rouge, La.) is batting .417 (5-for-12) in the last four games, with one home run and four RBI. He leads the SEC this season in slugging percentage (.900), home runs (5) and RBI (16) through 12 games. Valverde is also riding an eight-game hitting streak, where he is batting .414 (12-for-29) with three home runs and 10 RBI. Alabama pitchers have compiled a 1.00 ERA (36 IP, 4 ER) and logged 28 strikeouts during the four-game winning streak. Appalachian State (5-1) also brings a four-game winning streak into Friday's series opener. The Mountaineers are hitting .328 as a team and are led on offense by a trio of freshmen .400 hitters, including 1B Wes Borden (Charlotte, NC), DH Jason Rook (Greensboro, NC) and OF Rand Smith (Boliva, NC). Borden is batting .488 (13-for-29) with eight RBI to lead ASU in both categories. Rook is hitting .444 (8-for-18) with three RBI and Smith is batting .435 (10-for-23) with one home run and six RBI. The Mountaineers are coming off a 12-7 win over Campbell on Tuesday and six of the nine starters had two or more hits in the win.

*Alabama head coach Jim Wells has compiled 487 career wins, which ties Dr. Barry Shollenberger (1980-94) as the school's all-time winningest baseball coach.
*He tied the mark with a 7-6 win over Birmingham Southern on Tuesday, Feb. 28 at Sewell-Thomas Stadium (see boxscore page 20).
*Wells is now one win away from becoming the school's all-time winningest baseball coach and he will shoot for the all-time record on Friday, March 3 when Alabama hosts Appalachian State in the first game of a three-game series in Tuscaloosa.
*Wells has compiled a 487-228 (.681) record in 12 seasons at Alabama.
*Shollenberger posted a 487-334-1 (.534) record in 15 years at the Capstone.

BAMA'S WINNINGEST COACH
*By becoming the school's all-time winningest baseball coach, Jim Wells will have also accumulated more wins that any coach in the history of Alabama athletics.

*No one will argue that Paul W. Bryant is the greatest coach in the history of college football and his legacy at Alabama will never be matched.
