UA women fall to Georgetown

With loss, Alabama stands at 7-1

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Alabama women’s basketball fell 70-59 to Georgetown in McDonough Arena on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Crimson Tide stands at 7-1, while the win brings the Hoyas to 8-2 overall.

“It’s all about coming on the road and having toughness,” said Alabama head coach Kristy Curry. “You need to make plays on both ends of the floor and do that with consistency, and we didn’t do that today.”

Junior Hannah Cook led four in double figures for Alabama with 11, while junior Ashley Williams, sophomore Shaquera Wade and freshman Jordan Lewis chipped in 10 apiece. Both Lewis, fellow freshman Ashley Knight and junior Meoshonti Knight finished with a team-high seven rebounds, while Lewis dished out a season-high six assists. Georgetown was led in scoring by junior Dorothy Adomako, who had 20 points, while senior Faith Woodard recorded a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Alabama opened the game with an 8-0 run over the first 90 seconds, large in part to Cook, who knocked down back-to-back threes. From there, Georgetown scored 16 unanswered points to pull ahead by eight with 2:22 remaining in the quarter and would lead by the same margin at the end of the period, 18-10.

The Hoyas lead reached double digits at the 8:10 mark of the second following a layup by sophomore Dionna White. Georgetown would go on to lead by as many as 13 in the frame before the Tide cut it to nine, thanks to nine points and six rebounds from Ashley Knight. Alabama would trail by 11, 34-23, at the half.

The Tide scored nine of the first 15 points of the third to cut the Hoyas’ lead to eight, 40-32, with 5:13 to go in the quarter. Georgetown responded with a 9-2 run over the next two minutes to give the home team a 15-point advantage, its largest of the game. Alabama chipped it down to seven with 24 seconds to go before Adomako scored the final basket to give the Hoyas a 53-44 lead heading into the final period.

The Tide would come no closer than seven points in the fourth as Georgetown would outscore Alabama, 17-15 over the last 10 minutes of play.

For the game, the Tide shot 30.2 percent (19-63), while the Hoyas were 50.8 percent (30-59) from the floor. Alabama outrebounded Georgetown, 47-33, and took 28 free throws compared to the Hoyas’ nine attempts from the line.

“At the end of the day we just have to finish plays,” Curry said. “They made shot after shot, and we didn’t. We outrebounded them, 22-6, on the offensive boards. Those are energy statistics. We have to be able to make the shots on the road though, and today, we didn’t.”
