As the 2023-24 NBA season gets underway, a few former Alabama basketball stars are making waves around the league.
Every Monday, TideIllustrated will recap the performances of former Crimson Tide players from the past week of NBA games, and give key updates on those in the NBA G League. Here’s where those players stand as the season begins Wednesday:
Herb Jones - New Orleans Pelicans
This week: at Grizzlies (Oct. 25), vs. Knicks (Oct. 28)
Jones is one of the latest second-round draft steals in recent NBA history, having found a role in the Pelicans starting lineup after they took him with the 35th pick in the 2020 NBA Draft. In two seasons, Jones has averaged 9.7 points, 3.9 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game.
Jones has built off an exceptional season with the Crimson Tide in 2020-21, which saw him earn SEC Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year honors. He started 66 games for the Pelicans last campaign and was rewarded for his contributions with a four-year contract worth just under $54 million in the offseason. The contract solidifies that Jones will continue to be a big part of the Pelicans’ plans going forward, especially as they push for a playoff spot this season.
Jones received votes but missed out on an NBA All-Defensive Team spot at the end of last campaign, but with an expanded role in his third season as a pro, he has a great chance to earn that accolade and continue to become one of the NBA’s most notable defenders.
Brandon Miller - Charlotte Hornets
This week: vs. Hawks (Oct. 25), vs. Pistons (Oct. 27)
The No. 2 pick in the 2023 Draft should have the Buzz City buzzing this season. Although his stats in four preseason games don’t jump off the page he’s shown flashes of the exciting scoring potential that was on full display during his one season with the Crimson Tide.
Miller’s talent and potential landed him a four-year rookie contract worth just shy of $50 million. He will start the season rotating with veteran forward Gordon Hayward as he continues to get his feet under him at the NBA level. While it might be a slow introduction into big minutes this season, he’ll undoubtedly have several chances to shine and create an exciting scoring partnership with Hornets star guard LaMelo Ball.
Collin Sexton - Utah Jazz
This week: vs. Kings (Oct. 25), vs. Clippers (Oct. 27), at. Suns (Oct. 28)
Sexton signed a four-year contract with the Jazz after he was included in a blockbuster deal last season that sent Donovan Mitchell to Sexton’s former team, the Cleveland Cavaliers. In 48 games with Utah last season, Sexton averaged 14.3 points and 2.9 assists and should rotate in Utah’s backcourt along with Talen Horton-Tucker and Jordan Clarkson.
In his lone season with the Crimson Tide, Sexton helped lead Alabama to the NCAA Tournament and earned SEC Co-Freshman of the Year and Second Team All-SEC honors. Since coming into the league as the No. 8 pick in 2018, Sexton has had some exceptional seasons at the NBA level, with his best coming during the 2020-21 campaign when he averaged 24.3 points per game.
Kira Lewis Jr. - New Orleans Pelicans
This week: at Grizzlies (Oct. 25), vs. Knicks (Oct. 28)
After he was picked No. 13 in the 2020 NBA Draft, Lewis now enters his fourth season with the Pelicans. Lewis tore his ACL in 2021 and after a long recovery is back fully healthy and able to compete for minutes in the Pelicans guard rotation. Lewis missed over a year of basketball after the injury and returned on Dec. 13, 2022. He finished the 2022-23 campaign with 25 appearances, averaging 4.6 points per game.
Lewis played in four preseason games for the Pelicans ahead of this season and is in the final year of his rookie contract before he becomes a restricted free agent in 2024.
Noah Clowney - Brooklyn Nets
This week: vs. Cavaliers (Oct. 25), at Mavericks (Oct. 27)
After a breakout campaign with the Crimson Tide last season, Clowney was picked No. 21 by the Brooklyn Nets in the 2023 draft. He signed a four-year, $15 million contract and played in five games in the NBA Summer League and three in the preseason. He had a solid outing against Maccabi Ra’anana where he finished with 10 points and three rebounds and will serve as a rotation option at the four and five spots for the Nets this season.
Charles Bediako - San Antonio Spurs
This week: vs. Mavericks (Oct. 25), vs. Rockets (Oct. 27), at Clippers (Oct. 29)
After dominating the interior with the Crimson Tide last campaign, Bediako was picked up as an undrafted free agent by the Spurs. He played a total of nine minutes in the preseason, scoring four points, enough to secure one of the Spurs’ three two-way contracts. He’ll split time between San Antonio and the Spurs G-League affiliate, the Austin Spurs. His two-way deal allows him to play up to 50 games with San Antonio.
J.D. Davison - Boston Celtics
This week: at Knicks (Oct. 25), vs. Heat (Oct. 27)
Davison is set to start his second campaign with the Boston Celtics, who used the No. 53 pick in the 2022 draft on the former Crimson Tide guard, who averaged 8.5 points and 4.3 assists in 33 games at the college level. Davison signed a second two-way deal with the Celtics and will split time between Boston and its G-League affiliate the Maine Celtics. Davison averaged 12.5 points and 8.7 assists with Maine last season and appeared in 12 NBA games for Boston. Another productive season for the guard in the G-League should earn him some more playing time as a role player for a Boston side with championship aspirations.
Keon Ellis - Sacramento Kings
This week: at Jazz (Oct. 25), vs. Warriors (Oct. 27), vs. Lakers (Oct. 29)
Ellis played two seasons for Alabama from 2020 to 2022 and is starting the 2023/24 campaign on a two-way contract with the Kings. He played in three games during the preseason including a solid outing with 11 points, two rebounds and three blocks against the Golden State Warriors. Ellis appeared in 16 games for the Kings last season and averaged 1.5 points per game.
Josh Primo - Los Angeles Clippers
This week: vs. Trail Blazers (Oct. 25), at Jazz (Oct. 27), vs. Spurs (Oct. 29)
Primo’s contract was terminated by the San Antonio Spurs in 2022 and he was later suspended for four games by the NBA after its investigation found that he had engaged in inappropriate and offensive behavior by exposing himself to women. Primo has not played in an NBA game since Oct. 24, 2022, but was signed to a two-way contract with the Clippers ahead of this season.
Primo’s four-game suspension means he won’t be eligible to suit up for a game until the Clippers’ Nov. 1 matchup against the Lakers, but he’ll likely spend most of the season with the Clippers’ G-League affiliate the Ontario Clippers.
JaMychal Green - Free agent
Green is currently a free agent after he played in 57 games for the Golden State Warriors last season, averaging 6.4 points and 3.6 rebounds per game. Since his time at Alabama from 2008-2012, Green has been a serviceable role player in the professional ranks but is still awaiting a call from an NBA franchise. In addition to the Warriors, Green has spent portions of his professional career with the Spurs, Grizzlies, Clippers and Nuggets.
