Notebook: Week of rest helped most, but not enough

BATON ROUGE, La. _ Some of the University of Alabama players who went into the bye week nursing bumps and bruises appeared to have greatly benefited from the down time during Saturday's game at LSU.
For example, junior linebacker Courtney Upshaw, who had struggled with a high ankle sprain earlier this season, was in on six tackles, and sophomore linebacker Dont'a Hightower had a season-high 10 tackles.

"I came in feeling good, ready to go," Upshaw said. "I just came in with the mindset that we had to make plays."
However, not everyone was healthy. Sophomore running back Trent Richardson came into the game with a sore knee that he appeared to aggravate when scoring the only touchdown of the first half. He did return and had one more carry in the fourth quarter, but was pulled from special teams.
Junior Alfred McCullough started at right tackle, with redshirt freshman D.J. Fluker (groin) backing him up. True freshman Arie Kouandijo was one of 12 offensive linemen to make the trip.
Junior defensive back Phelon Jones, an LSU transfer, was the star for the second consecutive game with DeQuan Menzie (groin) a reserve.
Sophomore defensive lineman Kerry Murphy started, but essentially split time with Damion Square.
