New walk-ons include defensive back Caleb Castille (younger brother of former players Tim and Simeon, and youngest son of former All-American Jeremiah), defensive back Ranzell Watkins of Charlotte, N.C., punter Cody Mandell of Lafayette, La., and running back Nick Tinker of Tuscaloosa County High School.
Familiar walk-ons include senior receiver Rob Ezell, sophomore safety Will Lowery, sophomore receiver Hardie Buck, sophomore offensive lineman David Williams and senior linebacker Michael DeJohn.
The roster also lists junior running back Nate Carlson, a transfer from Air Force who went to Briarwood Christian in Birmingham.
Fan Day
Sunday's Fan Day practice at Bryant-Denny Stadium will be the only workouts open to the public during fall camp.
Gates open at 1:30 for the 2:30 p.m. practice.
Players and coaches will be available for autographs immediately following the practice on the field for just 45 minutes. Fans will be limited to one item per person for autographs, and no posed photographs will be permitted.
Fans may enter the stadium beginning at 1:30 p.m. at the northwest spiral (gate 5) and occupy the lower bowl (sections A-N). The open practice, which is slated to start at 2:30 p.m., is scheduled to last approximately two hours.
Those wishing to participate in Fan Day will enter through gate 46 and exit via gate 5.
It's a long day for the players, who also have their Media Day in the morning, following by the taking of the team picture.
New nutritionist
Players are crediting Amy Bragg, the Director of Performance Nutrition at University of Alabama Athletics who formerly worked at Texas A&M for helping them cope with the extreme heat.
"I feel like that has helped because eating is half of the battle," sophomore linebacker Dont'a Hightower said. "You have to stay hydrated, but loading up on carbs and protein is very important as well."
"She's done a really good job of not only helping our players get educated on how to take care of themselves in situations like this," Nick Saban said.
Tide-bits
Mark Ingram spoke to the congregation and was a pallbearer at his grandfather's funeral Saturday. Arthur Johnson was 75. "He was always there for me, ever since I can remember," Ingram was quoted in the Flint Journal. "He was a very special person." Ingram is not expected to be back on campus in time for Fan Day.
True freshman Blake Sims continued to get some work at quarterback, but wore a white jersey while the other quarterbacks were in their usual black Saturday. Lining up in different spots were junior Alfred McCullough at left tackle and senior Brian Motley at left guard on the second unit. Also getting into the mix more were a number of Alabama's young defensive backs.
Safety Kendall Kelly missed his second practice after having "heat issues" Thursday evening.
The temperature was 93 degrees during Alabama's first full-squad practice, with a heat index of 102, but in cloudy and breezy conditions. Players worked in shells for the first time.
