Day 2

Landon Dickerson selected by the Eagles with the No. 37 overall pick

Landon Dickerson became the first Crimson Tide player picked in the second round of the NFL Draft when he was selected No. 37 overall by the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles selected Alabama wide receiver DeVonta Smith in the first round.

Dickerson earned the Rimington Trophy Award last season while serving as a leading force on Alabama’s Joe Moore Award-winning offensive line. The starting center was the Tide’s highest-graded blocker earning a 91.3 offensive grade from Pro Football Focus. He also had the fifth-highest run-blocking grade in the nation, earning a 92.8 mark.

Dickerson injured his knee during the SEC Championship Game against Florida. He was able to make a ceremonial appearance during Alabama’s national championship win over Ohio State as he came on to snap the ball as the Tide took a knee to run out the clock. Dickerson’s knee injury is the latest in a long line of setbacks during his college career. However, the offensive lineman says he should be back in time to start the season.

“I’m doing phenomenal when it comes to recovery,” he told Good Morning Football last month. “I’m right on track with where I need to be. We feel comfortable. The medical staff, the training staff, we feel very comfortable that I should be ready this coming season.”

Christian Barmore selected by the New England Patriots with the No. 38 overall pick

Christian Barmore’s frustrating wait is finally over. After failing to hear his name in Thursday’s first round, the defensive tackle was the second Alabama player off the board in Round 2 Friday as he was selected No. 38 overall by the New England Patriots in the second round.

New England selected Alabama quarterback Mac Jones in the first round. The Patriots moved up from No. 46 overall to acquire the pick from the Cincinnati Bengals

Barmore led Alabama with eight sacks and finished third on the team with 9.5 tackles for a loss through 12 games last season. He also forced a team-high three fumbles and tallied six quarterback hurries. Barmore was Alabama’s highest-graded defender, earning 90.0 grade from Pro Football Focus. He also led the nation’s defensive linemen with a 91.5 pass-rushing grade.

“Barmore’s explosive first step, violent hands and upper-body power are the ingredients of a three-down defender with the versatility to play a number of positions in an even or odd front as an impactful rookie starter,” draft analyst Lance Zierlein wrote in his evaluation on NFL.com.

Day 3

Carolina Panthers select Deonte Brown in sixth round

Carolina just ordered a helping of “Cornbread.” Deonte Brown was the first Alabama player off the board on Day 3 as he was selected with the 193 overall pick by the Carolina Panthers in the sixth round. The lineman is the Crimson Tide’s ninth total selection in this year’s draft.

Brown is known as a mauler in the running game but has also been a solid pass-blocker during his Alabama career, not allowing a single sack over 856 pass-blocking snaps. After weighing in at 364 pounds at the Senior Bowl in January, the mammoth guard slimmed down to 346 pounds by Alabama’s pro day in late March.

“Brown is wide, strong and built low to the ground with a natural leverage advantage,” Zierlein wrote in his evaluation on NFL.com. “While he shines as an in-line power blocker, teams might also take note of his solid technique and reactive quickness. He worked extremely well with center Landon Dickerson on double teams and twists. His lack of length and physical traits will turn some teams off, as will his weight and body type. He's steady and powerful, though.”

Carolina Panthers select Thomas Fletcher in sixth round

For the first time in NFL Draft history, an Alabama long snapper is off the board. Thomas Fletcher was selected by the Carolina Panthers with the No. 222 overall pick in the sixth round. Earlier in the round, the Panthers selected Crimson Tide offensive lineman Deonte Brown.

Fletcher is Alabama’s 10th selection of the draft, marking the fourth time Saban has produced double-digit draftees during his time with the Tide.

Last season, Fletcher earned the Patrick Mannelly Award presented to the nation’s top long snapper. He served as Alabama’s long snapper the past four years and did not record a bad snap in any of his 55 career games.

Alabama has two former long snappers in the NFL in Cole Mazza (Los Angeles Chargers) and Carson Tinker (New York Giants). Both entered the league as undrafted free agents.
