Alabama basketball secured its first regular-season sweep over the weekend, beating Kentucky inside Coleman Coliseum after outlasting the Wildcats on the road last month. Now the Crimson Tide will look to repeat the feat against Mississippi State.

Alabama needed a missed layup in the final minute to come away with an 88-84 victory over Mississippi State in the teams' last meeting on Jan. 29. That game saw Bulldogs guard Josh Hubbard drop a career-high 38 points on 14 of 28 shooting, including 6 of 15 from 3.

Alabama has won its last seven meetings against Mississippi State, including a regular-season sweep of the Bulldogs the past two years. Mississippi State’s last win inside Coleman Coliseum came on Feb. 20, 2016, when it beat Avery Johnson’s Alabama team 67-61.

Here’s everything you need to know about Tuesday’s game.

Mo on the mend?

Nate Oats called out Mo Dioubate when assessing Alabama’s struggles against Kentucky over the weekend. The sophomore finished with 4 points and five rebounds over 14 minutes against the Wildcats. Oats feels those numbers could have been better had Dioubate been “a little bit more locked into the scouting report stuff.”

Dioubate’s production against Kentucky was a dip from his recent performances. The forward recorded his third double-double of the season the game before, putting up 13 points and 10 rebounds during the Tide’s loss at Missouri. Before that, he served as a bright spot in the loss to Auburn, tallying 8 points and seven boards.

Following Monday’s practice, Oats hinted that Dioubate’s off night against Kentucky could have been due in part to a nagging injury. The head coach did not reveal what his forward is dealing with at the moment. However, Dioubate has been playing with a taped left thumb in recent games.

“Once we got going in practice, I thought he had a decent close to practice today,” Oats said. “He’s got to be able to focus on what he needs to focus on, even if he’s got some nagging injuries. I mean, nagging injuries are part of the game. You can’t let that take your attention off what you need to be focused on.”

Dioubate led Alabama with nine rebounds, including seven offensive boards during its win at Mississippi State last month. The Tide will need the blue-collar big to put in a similar performance against the Bulldogs if it wants to complete a regular-season sweep.

Holloway 3 party?

Oats can’t get enough of Aden Holloway’s 3-point prowess.

Literally.

A few days after Holloway made 5 of 12 shots from beyond the arc against Kentucky, Oats is still thinking about a few of the 3-point opportunities the sophomore guard passed up in the game.

"We need to get him more 3s," Oats said. "We need to get more open 3s. He needs to take more open 3s. He doesn’t miss hardly any. The more open shots we can get him, the better off our offense is gonna be."

Holloway’s 12 shots from beyond the arc were his most since he went 8 of 19 during a game against South Dakota State on Dec. 29. Counting this weekend’s win over Kentucky, he’s attempted five or more 3-pointers in just half of his 14 games since then. Over that span, Holloway is shooting 47.3% (35 of 74) from deep.

Holloway made 3 of 7 shots from range while chipping in 12 points off the bench during Alabama’s win over Mississippi State last month. Over 27 appearances this year, he leads the team and ranks third in the SEC, shooting a blazing 41.9% from deep.

Game notes

— Alabama has scored 90 points or more in 14 games this season, the most by a Division I program.

— Since 2004, Mark Sears is the 19th player in Division I to have 65 career games scoring 20 points or more. He is the only active player to achieve the feat.

— Sears is the first player in Division I this season with back-to-back 30-point games. He is just the second player to do it in the past 20 seasons.

— Aden Holloway has scored 10 points or more in 19 games coming off the bench this season, which leads the SEC.

— Since the 2020-2021 season, Alabama has made 15 or more 3-pointers in 23 games, which ranks No. 1 in Division I.

— Josh Hubbard is close to becoming the sixth player in Mississippi State history to record 500 points and 100 assists during the same season. He currently has 482 points and 90 assists.

— Mississippi State’s Cameron Matthews ranks first in the SEC in steals (2.5 spg) and seventh in assists (3.8 apg).

— Over Cameron Matthews’ five-year career, Mississippi State is 16-5 when he records five or more assists. That includes an 8-1 mark this season.
