Paul W. “Bear” Bryant, Nick Saban, Gene Stallings, Frank Thomas and Wallace Wade will have some company among the statuary near Bryant-Denny Stadium in the future, with plans underway to add Heisman Trophy winners Mark Ingram and Derrick Henry to the collection.
There’s no announced timetable for the plan, but UA Director of Athletics Bill Battle confirmed Wednesday that it is in the works.
"We’re working on a project and a plan that we hope to complete soon, and we hope to take it to the Board and the President. But, at this time, this is in the early stages,” Battle said in a statement released by UA media relations.
According to the plan, statues of Heisman winners, Ingram (2009) and Henry (2015) will be permanently affixed to the plaza, joining statues of Alabama’s national championship-winning coaches. Exactly where the Heisman-winner statues will be situated isn’t clear. Presumably, future Heisman Trophy winners will also be honored with statues.
The plaza currently, also features statues of two nameless players that wear jersey numbers “18” and “92” which represents the year the university first fielded a football team, and the walkway up to the stadium is adorned with engraved bricks recognizing national and SEC championship teams.
