Alabama will need to hire its fourth offensive coordinator in three years as Brian Daboll accepted the same position with the Buffalo Bills, the team announced Sunday.
“Brian did a tremendous job for us this past season at Alabama, and I know he will do a great job for the Buffalo Bills,” Alabama head coach Nick Saban said in a statement released by the university. “He is an outstanding coach and coordinator who put us in position to be successful each week. We appreciate all that he did in terms of his time and his dedication in contributing to the success we had this season. We wish Brian, his wife Beth, and their entire family all the best.”
Daboll recently finished his first season with Alabama, helping lead the Crimson Tide to its 17th national championship. Under Daboll, Alabama’s offense ranked No. 15 in scoring (37.1 points per game). The Crimson Tide also ranked No. 29 in total offense with 441.1 yards per game, No. 13 in rushing offense (250.64 ypg) and No. 91 in passing offense (193.4 ypg).
Before Daboll took the job last season, Lane Kiffin served as Alabama’s offensive coordinator from 2014-16. After accepting the head coaching position at Florida Atlantic, Kiffin coached Alabama in the 2016 Peach Bowl against Washington. He was then replaced by Steve Sarkisian who coach the Crimson Tide in its 35-31 loss to Clemson in the national championship game before leaving to become the offensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons. Daboll was hired by Alabama on Feb. 20, 2017.
Daboll has experience coaching in the NFL in the past, serving his previous four years with the New England Patriots as an assistant before taking the job at Alabama. He has also served as an offensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs (2012), Miami Dolphins (2011) and Cleveland Browns (2009-10).
