Alabama eligibility tracker: A look at the Tide's roster before fall camp
The deadline for Alabama to trim down its roster is quickly approaching. At first glance, the Crimson Tide still appears to be above the NCAA’s 85-scholarship limit.
According to NCAA rules, Alabama has until Tuesday to pare down its roster to 85 scholarships. By our count, the Crimson Tide currently sits at 88 scholarships based on players still listed on its online roster.
The window for players to transfer and retain eligibility for the coming season closed on April 30. However, roster attrition is still possible.
Graduates still have the ability to transfer and play immediately for a new school. It’s also possible a player who hasn’t already redshirted might transfer and elect to sit out the season with his new program in order to get better acclimated for next year.
Alabama could theoretically use NIL to help reach the scholarship limit. The university estimates its cost of attendance with room and board to be $26,740 for in-state and $48,040 for out-of-state students. It’s possible Alabama’s NIL collective could cover such an amount. However, the player would have to be willing to forgo his scholarship.
Alabama doesn’t release which players are currently on scholarship, and there are ways the team can get creative in order to make numbers work. A player could theoretically forgo a scholarship in the fall and then pick one up in the spring when a teammate leaves.
With all that said, here’s a look at where Alabama stands heading into its first week of preseason camp.
