TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Alabama defensive lineman Raekwon Davis was shot in the leg and suffered a minor gunshot injury in the parking lot of a Tuscaloosa bar early Sunday morning, the university confirmed Sunday afternoon.

Davis, 20, was hospitalized at DCH Regional Medical Center with a minor injury in his right leg. A press release issued by the Tuscaloosa Sheriff's Office does not name Davis as the victim, but the university released a statement from head coach Nick Saban confirming the incident.

“Our concern at this time is for Raekwon and his health,” Saban said according to the release. “While this does not appear to be a serious medical situation, Raekwon is still being evaluated.”

The Tuscaloosa News reports Davis was not targeted and was instead hit by a stray bullet. The release from the Tuscaloosa Sheriff’s office states the case is “pending.”

“The victim told investigators he was standing outside of Bar 17 when he heard several gun shots and realized he had been shot in the right leg,” the release reads. “Investigators recovered several shell casings at the scene outside of Bar 17. The victim was uncooperative with investigators. The victim’s injuries were minor.”

Bar 17 located at 3217 10th Street, off Stillman Boulevard.

Davis, 6-foot-7, 306 pounds, has been practicing with Alabama’s first-team defensive line this preseason and is projected to be a starter this season. He appeared in seven games during his freshman season last year, recording four tackles including a sack.

No. 1 Alabama opens its season against No. 3 Florida State on Saturday at 7 p.m. CT inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

The Tuscaloosa News was first to report the incident.
