TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Alabama backup quarterback Mac Jones was arrested Friday morning and charged with driving under the influence, according to the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office.
He was also charged with improper ID by a minor. Jones was released on a $1,000 bond for the DUI charge and a $300 bond for the improper ID charge.
According to Tuscaloosa Police spokeswoman Lt. Teena Richardson, Jones, 19, was involved in a “minor traffic accident" at 2:14 a.m. at the intersection of 10th Avenue and Paul Bryant Drive. Officers then realized Jones was intoxicated, and after a Field Sobriety test he was charged with DUI. Officers also found a fake ID in Jones' possession.
No one was injured in the accident.
“We are disappointed in Mac’s actions and this is obviously not the kind of behavior we expect from our players," Alabama head coach Nick Saban said in a statement released by the university. "Mac has been suspended from Saturday’s game against LSU. We will further evaluate what actions we need to take moving forward so we can correct the behavior. It is a privilege to represent The University of Alabama and there are certain responsibilities that go along with that privilege.”
Jones is Alabama’s third-string quarterback and has yet to see the field this season for the Crimson Tide. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound true freshman was rated as the No. 9 pro-style quarterback and No. 162 player overall in the 2017 class. During Alabama’s A-Day game this spring, he completed 5 of 12 passes for 45 yards with two interceptions.
