Your Guide to Media Days
The 2012 college football seasons is still more than a month away, but the preseason hype in this part of the country begins with a bang Tuesday as the Southeastern Conference welcomes Missouri and Texas A&M to the league - now a 14-team conference - to open SEC Media Days in Hoover.
Missouri and Texas A&M join South Carolina and Vanderbilt on Tuesday's opening-day schedule, with each team represented by its head coach and three players. Running back Zac Stacy, a Bibb County High School product from Centreville, will be one of Vandy's three player representatives.
With the league's expansion to 14 teams, the SEC will squeeze six teams into an all-day-long series of sessions on Wednesday. LSU, among the preseason favorites to win the national championship, will be joined by Auburn, Arkansas, Florida, Mississippi State and Kentucky.
The defending national champion University of Alabama Crimson Tide will highlight Thursday's close. Head coach Nick Saban will be joined by center Barrett Jones, tight end Michael Williams and defensive end Damion Square in the morning session, which will also include Tennessee. Ole Miss and Georgia follow in the final session of the event.
How it works
Each day, coaches and players from each of the league's 14 teams will rotate through various rooms on the convention floor of the Wynfrey, meeting at designated times with members of the print, radio, television and internet media. Usually, each day includes at least one of the league's marquee programs. However, Tuesday's action will be headlined by league newcomers Missouri and Texas A&M, who will be making their SEC Media Days debuts. On Wednesday, six teams will rotate rather than four, accommodating the league's expansion, highlighted by the league's defending champion, LSU. On Thursday, national champion Alabama and SEC East champion Georgia will join Tennessee and Ole Miss.
Alabama's player representatives for SEC Media Days are offensive lineman Barrett Jones, tight end Michael Williams and defensive end Damion Square.
Look who's talking
Tuesday at 3 p.m., SEC Commissioner Mike Slive will deliver his annual "state of the league" address in the Wynfrey ballroom, followed by a Q&A session sure to center on the impact of SEC expansion and the establishment of a college football playoff beginning in 2014. ... Last week, SEC coaches released their preseason Coaches All-SEC team, which included two Alabama players on the first-team offense (tackles Barrett Jones and D.J. Fluker), and two linebackers on defense (Nico Johnson, C.J. Mosley). Overall, 11 UA players were selected. ... At the end of the week, the SEC will release results of media polling on an All-SEC team, a predicted order of finish in each division, and a league champion.
