Alabama hires Bo Davis as defensive line coach

Nick Saban reached into his past for the University of Alabama's latest hire, pulling Bo Davis away from Southern Cal to be its new defensive line coach.

Davis coached at Alabama as the defensive line coach from 2007-10 and was on Saban's previous staffs at LSU and the Miami Dolphins.

He was introduced as Southern Cal's defensive line coach Jan. 7 after serving as a Texas assistant coach from 2011-13. He made $356,000 in 2013 at Texas before leaving for Southern Cal for approximately a week. His salary at Southern Cal, a private institution which is not subject to public records requests, was not available.

Prior to going to Texas, the 42-year-old Davis spent eight seasons on Saban's staffs. He is an LSU alumnus, playing on the Tigers' defensive line from 1990-92 and graduated in 1993.

During his time at Alabama Davis helped mentor Crimson Tide defensive linemen such as former first-round NFL draft pick Marcell Dareus, Josh Chapman, Brandon Deaderick, Terrence Cody, all currently playing in the National Football League.

In his four seasons under Saban at UA, the defense consistently ranked in the top 10 nationally and among the best in the Southeastern Conference.

He replaces Chris Rumph, who left Saturday night for the same position at Texas.

Rumph spent three seasons in Tuscaloosa and was instrumental in helping develop freshmen defensive linemen A'Shawn Robinson and Jonathan Allen. He made $360,000 in 2013.

It is the second straight season that Alabama hired a coach away from a school which had just hired that respective coach. Last year, Saban hired Billy Napier away from Florida State. Napier was only at Florida State for three weeks before accepting the Crimson Tide's offer.

It's the second hire of an assistant coach since Alabama's 45-31 loss to Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl.
