Bama tries to end 2012 on high note

The University of Alabama men's basketball team will close out 2012 against Tulane today.

Alabama and Tulane will play for the 84th time, with the Tide owning a 52-31 all-time advantage. Today's game will be the first meeting between the two since Dec. 5, 1998, when UA defeated the Green Wave 53-52 in New Orleans.

"Tulane is an excellent team," Alabama coach Anthony Grant said. "They are 10-3 on the year and they could easily be 12-1. They've lost a couple of close games at Nebraska and at San Diego. They are playing great basketball right now and they have a nucleus of experienced veterans, size and depth."

Alabama guards Trevor Releford and Trevor Lacey form one of the top scoring backcourts in the Southeastern Conference. Releford (16.3 points per game) and Lacey (13.4) account for 44 percent of the team's scoring average (67).

Releford, who was on the 2013 Bob Cousy Award watch list, tops the team in and steals (22) is also one of the top 3-point shooters (41.7 percent) and free-throw shooters (86.2 percent) in the SEC. Forward Rodney Cooper leads the team in rebounding at 4.6 per game and averages 12.7 points per game.

Tulane is led by guard Ricky Tarrant and forward Josh Davis. Tarrant averages 15.1 points to go along with three assists per game. Davis leads the team in scoring and rebounding, nearly averaging a double-double at 18.4 points and 9.9 boards.

"They have great personnel," Grant said. "Josh Davis will be as good as any power forward we will play this year. He is very effective, and the way he gets it is his athleticism and his energy. Ricky Tarrant was their league's freshman of the year last year and is off to a great start this season. Their two-guard (Jordan Callahan) is likely going to be the all-time leading 3-point shooter in school history. He is a senior that is experienced and versatile. They have a lot of moving parts and good depth. Coach (Ed) Conroy has done a great job with his team."

Tulane is coming off a big win against Hofstra in which it used a 20-0 run to open the second half to win 83-62. The Green Wave is on a three-game winning streak and has won seven of its last eight games.

Alabama is coming off a 66-59 home loss to Mercer in which the Crimson Tide let a double-digit second half lead slip away. December has not been kind to the Crimson Tide, which has lost four of its five games after a 6-0 November.
