Releford, Simmons are SEC players of week

BIRMINGHAM | The University of Alabama swept Southeastern Conference Player of the Week honors in both men's and women's basketball, with Trevor Releford on the men's team and Daisha Simmons on the women's team taking the league's highest weekly honors. The SEC office released the player honors Monday.

Releford, a 6-foot, 195-pound junior point guard, averaged 18 points, three assists and 1.5 steals for the Crimson Tide last week in leading Alabama to the 2K Sports Classic championship. Releford was named Most Outstanding Player of the event after scoring 14 points against Oregon State in the semifinal and a career-high 25 points on 8-of-10 shooting in the championship game against Villanova.

Alabama improved to 4-0 with the wins in New York City and will host Charleston Southern at 7 p.m. Friday in Coleman Coliseum.

Simmons, a sophomore guard, scored a career-high 22 points in UA's victory over Houston and added 10 points, seven steals, five rebounds, five assists and three blocks in a victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

The UA women (4-0), who beat North Texas 88-83 in triple overtime Monday night, will be at home against Southeastern Louisiana on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Foster Auditorium.
