Staff Picks: Western Carolina

The TideSports.com staff make their predictions for Alabama matchup with Western Carolina.

Western Carolina 7

How will Alabama react after its 29-24 home loss to SEC newcomer Texas A&M? Western Carolina doesn't pose much of a threat, but maybe Alabama needs to work on Alabama and eliminate turnovers, crank up the running game and regain its status of being a dominant team. Texas A&M displayed more intensity and put Alabama in a hole early. The Tide responded, but it wasn't enough to win, and the defense wasn't able to shut down a diversified, multiple-formation offense.

Western Carolina 6

The Catamounts can be fairly cast as one of the most prohibitive underdogs to visit Tuscaloosa in the Saban era, along with the fledgling Georgia State team Bill Curry brought for a ride through the Tide's early-November nonconference buzzsaw. The theme this week from the coaching staff? Emphasizing how UA plays more than what the opponent does. Probably not what Western Carolina wants to hear.

Cecil Hurt
Alabama 50,
Western Carolina 0

Probably the last thing Western Carolina needed was an angry Alabama team, but even if they were as happy as Donald Trump in a wigwam, the Catamounts would be bereft of hope. The main question here is which players will see action in the second half.

Damien Martin
Alabama 63,
Western Carolina 0

Not only is Western Carolina a lower-tier team, it is an abysmal one. The Crimson Tide defense surely has had an earful this week about allowing 400-plus yards in consecutive games and will take out its frustrations. After failing near the goal line last week, the Alabama offense will get back to a punishing ground game against a defense surrendering more than 500 yards per game against Southern Conference competition.

Michael Southern
Alabama 52,
Western Carolina 3

Alabama lost control of its national championship destiny after the stunning home loss last week against Texas A&M. Now the Crimson Tide must pick itself up emotionally and focus on the task at hand. While Western Carolina won't boost the strength of schedule for the Crimson Tide, playing against the Catamounts will help Alabama regain some confidence and swagger as it heads into the final stretch of the regular season.

Edwin Stanton
Alabama 52,
Western Carolina 0

No real need for any pregame analysis of this game. Alabama will win, and win big. The real action today will be keeping an eye on Notre Dame, Oregon and Kansas State and whether one of these undefeated teams will fall and let a little light in on Alabama's BCS title hopes. It's not likely, but after losing to Texas A&M last week that's all the Tide can do - hope.

Harold Stout
Alabama 45,
Western Carolina 3

Normally, I'd say the starters will get the rout started and then hand the reigns over to the reserves to finish the job. That may not happen today. After the last two weeks, the starters may be on the field longer just to get back in the proper groove. But they'll get some rest ... right after they show what they can do. Western Carolina will take the brunt of their rage. Then the reserves will come in and take it home.

Aaron Suttles
Alabama 55,
Western Carolina 6

Alabama will bounce back with a dominating performance this week, even as it pulls the starters after half to get younger guys some action. There is no danger of looking ahead to Auburn. There's not much you can learn from this game against an overmatched Western Carolina team and I expect the attendance to show it.
