Tide has 'demanding' non-conference schedule

TUSCALOOSA | The University of Alabama men's basketball team will visit Cincinnati, VCU and Texas Tech out of conference, play Oregon State and either Purdue or Villanova in New York's Madison Square Garden and host Charleston Southern, Lamar, Dayton, Mercer, Tulane and Oakland in non-conference games at Coleman Coliseum in the 2012-13 season.

The Crimson Tide will also have Southeastern Conference home dates against Tennessee, Texas A&M, Kentucky, Arkansas, LSU, South Carolina, Mississippi State, Auburn and Georgia on the schedule, which was announced Friday.

Alabama will host Stillman College in a Nov. 6 exhibition to open the season, and will also host two other games against opponents to be determined in the 2K Sports Classic on Nov. 9 and 11. UA will close out that week in New York against Oregon State and Purdue or Villanova in the same event. UA's home opponents in the 2K Sports Classic will be announced at a later date.

Alabama is coming off back-to-back 20-win seasons and made it to the NCAA Tournament last season for the first time in six years.

Alabama will host Charleston Southern and Lamar in late November and visit Cincinnati, a Sweet 16 participant last season, on Dec. 1 as part of the SEC/Big East Challenge. Alabama will host Dayton on Nov. 5 and visit VCU 10 days later. A trip to Texas Tech and home dates against Mercer, Tulane and Oakland close out the Crimson Tide's out-of-conference schedule before Alabama opens SEC play at Missouri on Jan. 8.

"We have assembled another exciting and demanding non-conference schedule," UA head coach Anthony Grant said in a press release. "Eight of our current potential 12 non-conference opponents advanced to the postseason last year. We'll face four quality programs in the 2K Classic to open the season and then 2012 NCAA Tournament teams such as Cincinnati, VCU and Lamar."

Alabama's schedule includes 20 home games against teams that won 18 or more games last season, including seven out-of-conference games against team that won 20 or more games.

All of UA's SEC contests will be televised, with seven currently scheduled to be carried on either ESPN or ESPN2. Alabama will visit Missouri on Jan. 8 and host Kentucky on Jan. 22 in ESPN-televised games, with ESPN2 scheduled to carry UA's home game against Tennessee on Jan. 12 and road game at Tennessee on Jan. 26, Alabama's home games against Arkansas on Jan. 31 and vs. LSU on Feb. 9, and a road game at Florida on March 2. Other games will be televised by CSS, Fox Sports Net, ESPNU or as part of the SEC Network syndicated package.

UA's non-conference television schedule will be announced at a later date.
