Springing to action
TUSCALOOSA | The University of Alabama opened spring practice Friday at the Thomas-Drew Practice Facility, going through drills in shorts. Here are some practice observations from Tidesports.com:
***As Tidesports.com indicated Thursday, senior-to-be offensive lineman Barrett Jones opened spring practice at the center position. Having played left tackle last year, Jones now gets a look from the UA coaching staff to be the potential replacement for former center William Vlachos. ... Left tackle Cyrus Kouandjio's development in the spring, coming off a knee injury, will be a factor in what is ultimately decided on Jones' position.
***Redshirt freshman Brent Calloway worked with outside linebackers coach Lance Thompson Friday as the UA staff's look at the former running back's defensive skills got underway. UA coach Nick Saban had indicated Calloway would likely open drills at an inside linebacker spot, but for the moment, it appears Calloway will get a look at the Sam (strongside) spot.
***Running back Eddie Lacy and offensive lineman Arie Kouandjio opened spring drills in black (non-contact) jerseys. Both are recovering from injuries.
