Guards rule the day at 'The Workout'
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Nike Team Florida's "The Workout" has long been an annual stop on the scouting trail. The late September event kicked off on Saturday at the Wildwood recreation center in St. Petersburg, Fla. Class of 2013 Rivals150 guard RaShawn Powell was among those on top of his games.
Powell a true point guard
Exposure camps have a way of turning into wild displays of shot-jacking and trash talk. Class of 2013 point guard RaShawn Powell wasn't going to let that happen on his watch.
The 5-foot-11 product of Orlando (Fla.) Dr. Phillips checks in at No. 136 nationally in the junior class and looked the part of a high-major floor general on Saturday as he found teammates for open shots over and over again and scored whenever he wanted to.
While he can score, Powell wants to be a pass-first guy.
"I make sure I get my team involved out there," said Powell. "When people aren't hitting I will still try to get them the ball but if I need to I can go back into that scoring mode."
So far this fall Powell has had schools such as Virginia Tech, Miami and Wyoming drop in to watch him work out. According to Powell the Hurricanes have offered along with UCF and Seton Hall. Others involved include Tennessee, Clemson, Memphis and Murray State.
For now, though, Powell is focusing on adding strength and continuing to round out his game.
"I've been in the weight room last year before AAU season and since school started," said Powell. "We've got workouts at school and then I work out with my dad whenever I can."
Saturday's top performers
DeMarcus Croaker, SG - It wasn't tough to find the most athletic player in the gym on Saturday. The 6-foot-3 junior at Orlando (Fla.) Jones has an electric first step and is a high riser in the open floor. The three-star is much improved as a ball handler as well.
Daxter Miles, PG - A quick and elusive point guard, Miles is a product of Baltimore who is at Bradenton (Fla.) IMG. Nobody could stay in front of him off the dribble and the junior was able to create space for his offense at will.
Alain Chigha, SF - The event's most competitive guy two years running, he's a long and active small forward. The junior is tough in transition and working to improve his skill game.
Ayinde Sprewell, SG/PG - Originally a member of the class of 2012, the 6-foot-3 combo guard recently de-committed from Morehead State and is planning on a prep year, making him class of 2013. Sprewell is a big-time athlete who makes plays at and above the rim. If he gets consistent with his jumper, high majors will need to take a look at the Orlando (Fla.) Agape Christian product.
David Andoh, PF - A senior from California who is at IMG, the 6-foot-7 Andoh is a lean, ball-handling four-man. His preference is to take guys off the dribble and he was active all day long on the glass.
Shane Whitfield, SF - The native of North Carolina has re-classed to 2013 and loves to attack and finish through contact. A brawling wing who is physical and athletic, the Brandon (Fla.) Faith Baptist product made plays off the dribble all day long.
Jason Wilkinson, PF - A thin junior, the 6-foot-7 power forward plays hard on each end and is growing into his body. Soft hands and good instincts serve him well around the rim.
