Georgia QB schedules spring visit to Iowa
A couple weeks back, the Iowa Hawkeyes were the first school to come through with a scholarship offer for Georgia quarterback Hutson Mason. Since then, the 6-foot-2, 190-pound Mason has stayed in close contact with the Iowa coaching staff and plans to give them a visit this spring. We caught up with the all-state quarterback to get the latest on his recruiting, his interest in the Hawkeyes, and much more.
Q: Can you talk a little bit about Iowa and how the offer and everything came about?
MASON: Iowa was the first school to begin the recruiting process with me. They had been sending letters for a really long time and I've been keeping in contact with Coach Kaczenski, who is my recruiting area guy. I call him about once a week. They got my film and they said they liked it a lot, so time just went by and I kept staying in contact with them. Then we kind of stopped talking for about a month, so I sent them an e-mail and just wanted to know what they thought of my film so I could get some feedback if they were interested or not. Coach K told me to call him, so I called him that night and they offered me over the phone. It was definitely a huge surprise, coming out of the middle of nowhere really. I wasn't expecting it at all.
Q: That was a couple of weeks ago, right?
MASON: Yeah, that was about two or three weeks ago. Then I got the letter about three days later in the mail.
Q: What was your initial reaction when you got the offer?
MASON: I was speechless actually when he offered me. You've never experienced that before what it's like to actually be offered a full scholarship. I was sitting there and I almost started laughing actually. I was like, "Wow."
As a junior, Mason completed 292 of 420 passes (69.5%) for 3,705 yards and 30 touchdowns. After leading Lassiter High School to a 9-3 record in 2008, he earned first team all-state honors and was named offensive player of the year in Georgia's Class 5A by the Associated Press.
