UA loses veteran
Alabama defensive back Sam Burnthall has left the team, a source close to the situation told BamaOnLine.com.
The 6-2, 185-pound junior was a two-year letterman for the Crimson Tide, but had not yet made an impact on the defense in a reserve safety role. Playing on special teams, Burnthall logged nine tackles as a freshman in 2006. The Decatur, Ala., native appeared in three games last season, but did not record a tackle.
Playing time for Burnthall did not seem on its way in fall camp, as safeties Justin Woodall, Tyrone King, Ali Sharrief and Mark Barron have commanded much of the presence beside returning starter Rashad Johnson during camp.
Burnthall's departure leaves Alabama with 82 scholarship players, three under the NCAA maximum.
