Rivals250 OL visits UA

Memphis standout Barrett Jones has quietly turned into one of the nation's most highly recruited offensive lineman. Jones, 6-foot-5, 270-pounds, has offers from over 20 programs including most of the South, Michigan and UCLA. This week the Rivals250 tackle made the trip to Alabama for an unofficial visit while watching his brothers attend the Tide's football camp.

"I went to Alabama for a couple of days and watched the football camp while my brother went to basketball camp. The first thing I noticed was it was totally different from last years. It was better organized and very intense. I talked to some of the players afterward and they said it was hard but they loved it," Jones said. "For me it was a chance to watch the coach's work and see their technique. I was very impressed. I watch Coach (Joe) Pendry very closely and I love his style. He's got so much knowledge from having been around the game so long and I learned a lot from him. He's also a very nice guy."

Jones, whose father played basketball at Alabama, has made numerous trips to the Capstone this year but he enjoyed his time with Tide defensive coordinator Kevin Steele.

"I know everything I need to about Alabama from a campus and football standpoint. I've grown up around that. For me this was a chance to get to hang out with some of the coaches and get to know them better," Jones said. "I spent most my time with Coach Steele and I just love him. He's a great recruiter, everyone knows that, but he's also a guy I trust and enjoy talking to. He's a great role model and he never pushes me when it comes to recruiting. We talk about it but he tells me to take my time."

Another benefit of his visit to Tuscaloosa was he got to hang out with good friend and fellow offensive lineman Tyler Love.

"I hung out with Tyler all day Tuesday. We are close and I always like hanging with him. We watched the offensive lineman closely," Jones said. "We are good friends and we talk about recruiting all the time but we haven't got a plan to go to school together. If it happens it would be great but just because one of us goes to a certain school doesn't mean the other one will. But it certainly wouldn't hurt that schools chances to get us both."

So far this year Jones has made several unofficial visits throughout the country and he indicated he will take a few more before shortening his list.

"I'm going to North Carolina this weekend and then to LSU later on but that will be it. I'll trim my list in early August and start narrowing my focus to those schools," Jones said. "For now though I'm still enjoying the process and like getting to take visits to different schools. That is the fun part because it gives me a better feel for what is going on and I'm able to build relationships with the coaching staffs."

Jones boasts 4.95-40 speed, 335-pound bench press, 490 squat and 29-inch vertical jump.
