HURT: Saban emphasizes discipline

The things that Nick Saban was saying weren't new. What made them effective was the setting.

Saban, speaking at the final press opportunity before tonight's Sugar Bowl, revisited familiar themes. Discipline. Fundamentals. And he spoke of the creeping complacency that can undermine those things.

The fact that he was saying those things in New Orleans, not Pasadena, is what made them poignant. Had Alabama made one more play against Auburn - had it not flinched on a made field goal, or failed on a fourth-and-1 - the Crimson Tide would be in a very different setting, but it would be essentially the same team, just with one less mistake. Instead, Alabama pushed itself right to the brink of its margin for error and made one error too many.
