HURT: 1973 Sugar Bowl hangover lingers

Perhaps, if you are an Alabama fan, you woke up with that morning-after feeling - throbbing temples, foggy memory and an overwhelming wish that your fate could be swift, painless and, if possible, someone else's.

Perhaps that has absolutely nothing to do with New Year's Eve celebrating. Perhaps you woke up feeling that way on Dec. 1 and haven't shaken the malady ever since.

And, just maybe, if you are of a certain generation, you had the identical feeling on a morning exactly 40 years ago today.

For the 40th anniversary of the 1973 Sugar Bowl - the game was played on New Year's Eve that year - I took a quick ride to uptown New Orleans, to the very site where the most painful, most indigestible loss in Alabama history took place. At least, it was the most painful for Crimson Tide fans until the latest loss.
