Thompson Eager to get Started

High School teams across the state are putting the finishing touches on their preparations for the start of the season this week. Texas A&M fans are going to be keeping an eye in particular on Fort Bend (TX) Elkins as they have two Texas A&M verbal commitments. Both A&M commits, center Mike Matthews and safety Corey Thompson, are team leaders and will be looked upon for guidance as the team starts the season off Friday night. Thompson is looking forward to his role and says he feels like the team is ready for the 2012 campaign.

"I feel real good about my team right now," said the safety rated as a three star prospect by Rivals.com. "I cant wait until the season starts. We open up next week with Dayton and I just can't wait. I didn't get to play in the game with them last year but I was able to watch them and see what they do on offense so I am ready."

"We have a bunch of three year starters but we also have some juniors that are coming up and maybe even a few sophomores that might be able to jump in and contribute so I think we will be fine," added Thompson.

After missing some time last year due to injury, Thompson is eager to get back on the field to lead his team on the road to the playoffs. Elkins will use Thompson on both sides of the ball to maximize his versatility.

"I am going to play free safety and receiver this year," said Thompson late last week. "Coach (name) is putting in a package for me and a couple other guys that's on defense so we will be pretty versatile on both sides."

Like other Aggie commits in the class of 2012, Thompson has followed the developments in College Station in regards to conference affiliation and wishes that it were already out of the way.

"Actually, I wish that they had already gone to the Southeastern Conference," said the talented future prospect. "I just can't wait to see what they are going to be able to do this year. Really I wish they were already there now. That is the hardest conference in the conference and we could already start to get a look at what they are doing over there and get used to them."

As part of a successful recruiting class for the Aggies in 2012 (the group is currently ranked seventh nationally by Rivals.com), Thompson gets the sense that this could be just the first step for the Aggies in a climb to the next level.

"I feel that with the recruiting class that we have that we can compete with anybody," he said. "It's great to be a part of it. We already have such great chemistry because we have all known each other for a long time. Me Matt, Trey, Bralon we all go way back so we are already used to each other and are used to being around each other. We always talk about trying to get other guys to join us."

Rivals.com ranks Thompson as the 18th best safety prospect in the nation from the 2012 recruiting class and the 55th best prospect regardless of position in the state of Texas.
