I have a buddy that is getting rid of his dog due to issues with neighbors (He bit one of them through the fence). The dog is a 4 year old male and has always been great with my son and I. I'm thinking about adopting him. I think he'd make a great guard dog as well.

They suck and definitely don't belong in the house with small children.

All dogs a great and loving dogs until they snap. In the case of chows, pits, rotweillers, etc., they can maim or kill. With a beagle or spaniel, you can drop kick them.

I will say this right now, you are an absolute idiot if you adpot that dog. Dumbest idea ever.

He's gonna be an outside dog. He won't be in the house.

I'm probably not the guy to ask. If you remember, I shot my dog a month ago for his insubordination.

Can relate to the OP story

Had a chow growing up as a kid and it almost bit me when I jump over the fence going home one day.  My parents saw the hole in my shorts and had him put down.

OK, at the risk of getting banned you are officially an idiot. Do you ever expect your child go outdoors again after adopting the dog?

Worked for a vet as a teenager.  The only breed I would not get near is the Chow.  Horrible breed.

I've been around Chows very much over the years. Not a good dog for kids. Very territorial and very much live in a pecking order status. If they perceive that a kid is not above them in the pecking order, there would be trouble.

We'll both be outside with the dog at the same time. I'm telling y'all this dog is cool with the kid and I. He even let's my boy get on his back.

He already said the dog is good with his kid, I don't see what the big deal is.  Guess some folks just never grew up with dogs and don't get that they're great to have around kids.

My dog was a husky. He was also an unbelievable piece of garbage.

Had a client once who ran daily.  Her neighbor's 2 chows got out one day, ran her down a bolck from their home and literally dragged her to the ground.  Only a quick and brave intervention by a neighbor with pepper spray saved her.  She was literally chewed and torn up from  her arms to the ankles with a severe and deep open gash in her thigh.  She felt like she was being eaten alive.  The dogs had torn one kid's pant leg as he jumped over his own fence to avoid them just a few weeks before.  I have two big dogs and have been around them my entire life.  Chows are among the few dogs that make me uncomfortable.   RTR

Finally, some info I can use. I may have to reconsider if they are bad about eating their own shit. I can't have shit breath licking my face or my son's face.

Dog's are a product of their environment. I've never had an issue with any big dogs that I have owned.
