August 31, 2009 TUSCALOOSA | University of Alabama senior defense end Brandon Deaderick was shot in the left arm during an attempted robbery in the parking lot of Rivermont Apartments on Monday night. He was being treated at the DCH Medical Center, but the wound was not considered life-threatening. After his assailant fled, Deaderick retreated into a second-floor apartment. When rescue services arrived, he walked down the stairs with his left arm wrapped, and got onto the ambulance stretcher by himself. A visible trail of blood drops remained from the upstairs door down to the parking lot. "It looked like he had Kool-Aid all down his side," said neighbor Kasie Schroeder, a student of Shelton State Community College. According to complex residents, who initially believed Deaderick had been shot twice, the 6-foot-4, 306-pound player and his girlfriend had just pulled up in a small BMW outside of the apartment when the car was approached. "We heard someone tried to rob her and didn't know he was in the car," Schroeder said. "He got out to try and defend her and he shot him." Schroeder was on a rear balcony at the time didn't see the attack, but heard the shot. "It was real quick," she said. "My boyfriend heard the gunshot," said Danley Glass, a fellow Shelton State student. "He jumped up and said it sounded like a 22." Police interviewed both Deaderick and witnesses. At approximately midnight, numerous police vehicles were spotted down the street (Rice Mine Road) where a person was being arrested in front of Cypress Inn Restaurant. Reporters were told to vacate the area and officers would not confirm if the arrest was related to the shooting. Deaderick, 22, started all 14 games last season and has played in 34 career games for Alabama, while making 21 starts. He has 60 career tackles with 8.5 tackles for loss and six sacks. The starting defensive end is listed ahead of junior Luther Davis on the depth chart. Alabama is scheduled to open its season Saturday against Virginia Tech at the Georgia Dome. |
