The Alabama football team welcomed about 25 new players to preseason practice on Wednesday as a group of walk-one was added to the roster with the start of fall classes. UA practiced in full pads at the Thomas-Drew Practice Facility. A few observations by BamaOnLine.com from Tuesday's media viewing period:

Practice notes ...

*** As expected, true freshman Kellen Williams joined the team Wednesday - the only signee among the group added with the start of classes. What was not expected was his presence in full pads and in a white jersey (rather than the non-contact black jersey). With a knee injury suffered in the offseason, Williams was not expected to be ready to compete this fall. While he wasn't in a black jersey, he may still be limited in participation.

*** Cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick was in a black (non-contact) jersey on Wednesday, though there is no word on his injury status. UA coach Nick Saban will likely address Kirkpatrick's status in his next news conference on Thursday.

*** Redshirt freshman offensive lineman Barrett Jones continues to work with the first group at right guard.

*** Freshman focus: Eddie Lacy - The true freshman from Geismar (La.) Dutchtown has looked sharp throughout camp in ball drills, though more tentative in blocking drills. He's shown no signs of the knee tendinitis that hampered him in the offseason. Lacy's 7-yard average in Saturday's scrimmage (3 for 21) was the best among the ball carriers who were noted on UA-released statistics, but it remains unclear where Lacy stands among the depth at running back.

*** Safety Mark Barron worked again with the first group in the secondary during recognition drills at a safety position.

*** Former Pelham High quarterback Chris Vines was among the walk-ons who were added to the roster Wednesday. Vines left a minor league baseball career as a pitcher to join the Crimson Tide. In 2008, Vines compiled a 3.98 ERA for Myrtle Beach of the Carolina League.

*** Wide receiver Kenny Bell was not in attendance at practice. UA coach Nick Saban said Bell will be in a boot "for about a week" due to shin splints.

*** Alabama will practice again Thursday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. CST.
